N. A. m. Chief §: Says Many _ Depressed by Steps Taken to Win.

ATLANTIC CITY, N. J, May 21 ®. P)—A charge of “too much pessimism”. was leveled against the American public yesterday by Walter D. Fuller, chairman of the National ‘' Association of Manufacturers and president of the Curtis Publishing Co. "Mr. Fuller addressed the annual convention : of - the Pennsylvania Bankers’ association. “Many people,” he said, in outlining industiy’s role during and after the war, ‘seem more depressed over action taken with the objective of winning the war than over the pbesibility of defeat by the Japs or the Nazis. We have been the pioneers of progress for 150 years and this is certainly no time to hide our heads in the sand.

Weren't Good Enough

“Whether we like it or not, America is not going back to the ‘good old days’ They just were't good enough. There were days when 28 million people were receiving some form of public assistance; when there were 10 million unemployed; when there were 2,000,000 people on public. assistance in our own state of Pennsylvania.” { «Ms. Fuller charged that the nation faced danger from “some shortsighted but -ambitious labor leaders,” and that “there may develop an opportunity for another Huey Long—and this time fate may not be kind.” “Remember that empty stomachs are full of dynamite.” he warned. “Labor leaders may put the squeeze on their millions of new members if job opportunities become scarce again.” Discussing the post-war rebuilding of business, Mr. Fuller said that businessmen “must cut the cloth to fit the pattern or the reformers and demagogs will.”

She'll Have to Take Pot Luck

NEW YORK, May 21 (U. P). The sorrows of hoarding were forcefully impressed upon a Brooklyn housewife today, She anticipated rising prices and shortages last fall and stocked up on canned goods. ‘She bought cans of tomatoes, peaches, crane berry sauce, 20 kinds of soup, pickles, hash and peas until a room in her cellar was filled to the eaves. One afternoon she left home, and when she returned she found that a pipe had burst and flooded the basement. Every label was soaked from the cans and she - couldn't tell peas from peaches. Ini ition, led to the "Br se iy pr some method pd telling what the cans contain. ‘The library, in turn, asked industrial authorities, and no one could provide an answer. All were agreed on one thing; one way was to open the cans.

PURDUE FORESTER . GETS STATE POST

iv E. Shaw, extension forester at Purdue university for the past 12 years, has been appointed acting state forester in the state department of conservation. He succeeds Paul Yost who was called to duty-in the U. 8. army air corps intelligence division recently as a first lieutenant. Mr. Shaw will maintain his position on the Purdue staff .while performing his duties as state forester.

Indianapolis Morris Plan today elected H. L. Solomon, widelyknown banker, to its board of directors. Mr. Solomon is president of the American Finance conference which includes in its membership practically all the auto finance companies in the United States. He also is president of the Colonial Finance Co. of Lima, O. ' He was a member of the board in 1936 and has served in an advisory capacity - since. Other members of the board are William L. Schloss, president; LeRoy Kahler, secretary and treasurer; Howard M. Coots, vice president; J. Richard Freije, assistant secretary; Simon Ackerman, assistant treasurer, and Jackiel W, Joseph, general counsel. P. C. Neidlinger is executive vice president.

A new super market at Belmont ave. and Washington st. will be opened today by the Kroger Grocery & Baking Co. The store provides a large parking lot with entrances on both Belmont and Washington, It will remain open every evening until 9 p. m, White and Green The walls are white with green trimming. The meat department runs the entire width of the back of the store, A self-service fruit and vegetable department has been installed. 3 Included in the store’s equipment will be a self-service freezing case for Kroger ice cream, It is designed so that packages of ice cream’ will rise on small elevators after one is removed.,
