PRESS DEMANDS OF CORN STATES

Senators Fighting Price Pegs in Farm Bill May

Force Compromises.

, WASHINGTON, May 16 (U. PJ. —Fears of corn state senators that

price pegging provisions of the 1943 farm bill are detrimental to their interests may lead to a further

mands, it was learned today. The provisions, which already have been compromised fo meet administration desires, would permit 125,000,000 bushels of surplus wheat td be sold at sub-parity prices for feed. Surplus corn and other grains could be sold at any price in unlimited quantities for that purpose. A senate appropriations subcommittee, which held hearings on the $680,000,000 appropriations received what was termed a “definite” promise from the agriculture department that wheat for feed would not be sold at a price to break the corn inarket. But corn state senators were said to be demanding specific assurances in the form of legislation. Senator Richard B. Russell (D. Ga.) in charge of the bill may offer a new compromise amendment to the senate Monday. It would bar the commoditiey credit corporation, which owns the surplus stocks, from selling wheat at a price below 85 per cent of the parity price Sony corn. At present, the parity price on wheat is approximately $1.33 a bushel while the corn parity is 97 cents,

JOINT INCOME FILING FOUGHT i

Foes Say Proposal Backed By House Group Would

Deter Marriage. WASHINGTON, May 16 (U, P.).~—

| The proposal to force husbands and

wives to file joint income tax returns, which last year met bitter protest that it would place a “tax on marriage,” was back in the 1942 war revenue bill today. The house ways and means committee adopted the mandatory joint return by a vote of 13 to 10. Last year it wrote the same provision in the 1941 bill, but it was killed on the house ‘floor after representatives of eight “community property” states, various women organizations, church groups and President Roosevelt expresed strong opposition. The treasury, which backed the mandatory return last year and recommended it again in the present bill, contended that filing of separate returns gives some families an advantage over others.

Strong Opposition Certain

In the community property states, the treasury pointed out, a man who earns $10,000 may now file a feturn on $5000 and his

of his salary—may file a return on the ofher $5000. This allows the family to pay a smaller tax since surtax rates are lower for a $5000 income than for one of $10,000. Opponents of the plan charge that it challenges states rights and women's rights, and might even act as a deterrent on marriage by placing a tax premium on remaining single. Strong opposition to the amendment is expected again in both the house and senate—if it gets as far as the senate.

REMARKS GARBLED REP. HERBERT SAYS a:

WASHINGTON, %ay 16 (U.P). — Rep. J. Edward Hebert (D. La.) today denied that he had made a statement that “the nation’s system of government would collapse unless steps were taken to keep newspapers from taking cracks such as this at congressmen.” This statement was attributed to him in a United Press dispatch on Wednesday's house discussion over newspaper stories about issuance of X gas rationing cards to many congressmen. “What I did say on the floor of the house,” declared Rep. Hebert, “was this: ‘Unless something is done to curb that section of the

keystone of the democracy which allows it free speech, our whole system of government is going to collapse. . . . “I have never chjected to criticism of congressmen as individuals. I think it a healthy part of the American system of government which allows the press free and open criticism of any public official.”
