AMERICAN-ARMY HEADQUARTERS, Iceland,: May 15 (U. P.).— Here is a sure-fire way to make a hit with the average soldier in Iceland: wen ; Send . him plenty of bang-bang, six-shootin’ fiction, pictures of. girls who weren't: dressed for 'an Icelandic- winter, boxes of candy and cookies and phonograph records heavy with hot' licks. But don’t ‘bother to send cigarets, soap, shaving cream, razor blades and ‘other traditional soldier gifts. The boys can buy those necessities- in their post exchanges cheaper than in retail stores at home. . The men ‘guarding this rainsoaked lava pile in the North Atlantic ‘don’t want intellectual and moral uplift ‘in the packages from home. They want. entertainment and the “homey” touch. The American Red Cross, backed by large funds, is’ doing excellent welfare and recreation work among the troops. But there is ample room for additional small. gifts that can help make the soldier's life a bit more like that at home. ‘Numerous ‘unsolicited gifts of all kinds have been received from per-

schools and at 538 N. Meridian st.

sons and organizations.

Rival in: Senatorial - Race - Charges - McNary With - “War ‘Straddling.’

PORTLAND, Ore, May 15 (U. P.) —Oregon votes today in a primary election in which unanimous demands for all-out prosecution of the war ‘overshadowed minor issues. ; National. interest centered on the race . between . Senator Charles L. McNary and Arthur Geary, Portland attorney, for the Republican sensatorial - nomination. Geary, seeking office for the first time, charged McNary with “fencestraddling” on the war program, but political observers believed McNary, Republican minority leader and vice presidential candidate in 1940; ran small risk of defeat. McNary remained in’ Washington during the campaign. Candidates for the Democratic senatorial nomination were Walter Whitbeck and Dr. Macbeth A. Milne. hs \ Observers predicted . the lightest primary vote in years. Governér Charles A. Sprague, candidate for Republican renomination, stood on his record and was given- a slight edge over Secretary of State Earl Snell. Howard ‘Latoureite, Lew Wallace and Grover Fretwell, candidates for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, ‘all supported the national administration’s war program.
