This family scene is being repeated all over the country. But this one is newsworthy because it's Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Willkie congratulating son Philip after his graduation from a naval reserve midshipman’s school as an ensign. The Willkies are visiting in Rushville.

NAZIS FALL LIKE WOUNDED GEESE

R. A. F. Pilots’ Battle With Germans Off Libya Is ‘Dream Come True.’

By RICHARD D. McMILLAN United Press Staff Correspondent WITH THE ROYAL AIR FORCE IN LIBYA, May 15—German soldiers riding in Junkers-88 transport planes poked tommy guns from the windows of their planes and tried to fight off attacking British fighter planes over the Mediterranean, but it was ‘a losing fight and the British shot down 13 transports and saw the Germans die in burning pools of oil. The fight started Tuesday off the Libyan coast and the resultant battle was “the picnic every pilot

down in flames every half mile,”

“I saw the Nazis frantically open the windows and poke out their tommy guns,” a squadron leader “1 could see the winking flame as they fired from every opening. Face Twisted in Horror

The victory constituted one of the greatest air raids of the war and the fight lasted only about 20 minutes. “We ran the gantlet of every kind of fire—cannon, machine gun, tommy gun and rifle, but once we got among them the planes went down like wounded geese,” another pilot said. Flames and smoke covered the sea as far as the horizon.” A Junkers normally carries about 40 fully equipped men plus the crew, so that the British probably accounted for about 500 men in the brief battle.

‘LOOSE: TALK’ REBUKE

CANBERRA, May 15 (U. P.).— Prime Minister John Curtin said today that President Roosevelt wasn’t thinking about him Wednesday when he warned the Pacific war council in Washington that loose talk was “providing information of real value to the enemy.” “I have had no rebuke of any sort or description from the president about the leakage of news in my statements and there has been no divulging prematurely of operational news in my statements,” Mr. Curtin said at his. press conference. “It has been inferred that news of Gen. MacArthur's trip from the Philippines was due to a statement of mine. I am aware it was sent by a correspondent who ighored Gen. MacArthur's wishes.” Veteran political correspondents
