350,000 SEEK ~ T0 CRUSH SERBS
20 Italian Divisions and 4 From Reich Reported
In Balkans. LONDON, May 15 (U. P.).—The
« axis has launched a “large-scale of-
fensive” with more than 24 (ivisions (perhaps in excess of 350,000 troops), in an attempt to crush
‘Jugoslav resistance led by Gen.
Draja Mikhailovitch in the Serbian mountains, the British raido reported today. Determined to wipe out the guerrilla “second front” of Mikhailovitch in the Balkans, the axis was reported to have sent 20 Italian divisions, four German divisions and Hungarian and Bulgarian detachments against the guerrillas’ mountain lairs. A new German proclamation has threatened death for every Jugoslav aiding Mikhailovitch. An Ankara report said that Serbian patriots at Motchka engaged in a 10-day battle with regular German troops after seizing arms and ammunition, The London Times, in an Ankara dispatch, reported that Adolf Hitler’s attempts to obtain “cannon fodder” from the Balkan countries for his drives on the Russian front have failed and that “the enmity of the Hungarian and Rumanian populations against the Hitler regime is assuming ominous proportions.”
SILENT CONEDIAN | DIES AFTER SHOW
NEW YORK, May 15 (U. P.).— Joe Jackson, famous comedian, finished his turn at the Roxy theater today, made his way into the wings, and collapsed from a fatal heart attack. His last words were: “They're still applauding.” A trouper for more than 30 years, “Jackson’s trick cycling act was 8 ' standard headliner in
vaudeville ‘and survived that .era |
to continue a top-feature at filmhouse stage shows and theaters all over the country.’ In al] his years on the stage he never spoke a line. He would emerge in tramp costume and proceed to steal a waiting bicycle which always seemed to give him trouble. The handle bars would come loose and the wheels would unhinge while Joe somehow managed to keep his seat. He hardly varied his act from the time in Europe—he was born in Vienna—when he was doing a legitimate cycling act and his handlebars fell off. The reaction of the audience led him to incorporate the bit into the routine, which with few additions, he continued doing until his death. Jackson was an international favorite and listed Queen Elizabeth of England as one of his fans, He was 67.
BOARD RECEIVES ~ PLEA FOR PARK
A delegation of more than a score of southwest Indianapolis civic leaders: appeared before the park board yesterday and asked establishment of a new mark at an Minnesota st. and Belmont ave. The delegation, representing the Parent - Teacher association of School 46 and the Southwest Social
§ center, complained that their com- ‘ munity never has had adequate
playground facilities. Spokesmen for the delegation said there are between 6000 and 9000 children in that area and that the closest playground is Rhodius park, more than a mile away, . The site proposed for the park is a 30-acre trace of land which has not been in use. Park board members took the request under advisement, pending surveys and investigation, of the property, which is privately owned.

DOTS AND DASHES IN GRADE SCHOOL STUDY
BOSTON, (U. P..—Dots and dashes have been added to the three R's at the Oliver Wendell Holmes grade school. Five months ago Assistant Principal] William F. Mahoney, an amateur radio operator, organized a club for study of radio code. Now 15 pupils—two girls and 13 boys ranging in age from 11 to 14 —can receive dot-dash messages at a seven-word-a-minute rate. “Come to think of it, radio isn’t such a far step from teaching history these days at the rate changes are being made,” says Mr. Mahoney, a history teacher.
