‘SABOTAGE KEPT AT MINIMUM’ —HOOVER

SAN FRANCISCO, May 14 (U. P.) —J. Edgar Hoover, head of FBI, said today that disgruntled employees and aXis sympathizers acting on their own initiative—and not enemy agents—had accounted for the 128 sabotage cases in the country since January, 1940. Mr. Hoover said sabotage has been kept at a minimum. He attributed 2291 accidents in war industries to négligence due to accelerated production.. “There has been a great deal of

Fliers Set Truck Convoy Afire in Daring Raid,

Chinese Report.

By KARL ESKELUND United Press Staff Correspondent KUNMING, China, May 14.—Two young American aviators were credited today with breaking the backbone of a Japanese offensive against Yunnan province by a daring attack May 8 on an enemy truck col-

umn, : Generalissimo: Chiang Kai-shek asked for the names of the American daredevils and was expected to decorate them soon. The Americans, both members of the A.V. G. squadron, were credited by the Chinese with a service actually greater than the toll of 300 Japanese planes taken thus far by the A.V. G. Driving spectacularly toward Kunming, the Japanese reached the Salween river before Chinese reinforcements could be sent to the assistance of a small force guarding the river. The defenders were wiped out to the last man and the Japanese established headquarters, leaving their truck column two kilometers from the gorge.

Swoop Down on Trucks

The enemy had scheduled a crossing of the Salween during the night, with the fate of the entire Yunnan province hanging in the balance. Suddenly two small P-40’s dived out of the low-hanging, dark clouds and bore down on the Japanese headquarters with incredible speed and accuracy, Zooming up and circling, the planes then swooped down on the trucks which were protected by the gorge from Chinese fire. . A Chinese officer said that the planes swept so low over the truck column they seemingly touched the ground. Each released bombs despite a blanket of shrapnel. More than a dozen trucks were set afire. The daring Americans attacked five times despite a furious Japanese machine gun and rifle fusillade.

300 Japs Slain

Between 300 and 500 Japanese were killed or wounded before the Americans headed for the A V.G. base with empty guns. While the enemy was attempting to restore order, Chinese reinforcements arrived on the opposite bank of the Salween where they put up artillery and machine gun posts for an attack which never came. Instead, the Chinese crossed the river two days later. Another group of A.V.G. P-40’s returned to the scene and saw nearly 400 Japanese trucks and armored cars in full flight toward Wanting with the Chinese in hot pursuit.

ial — 360 W. WASH. ST.

The state conservation department hopes to do something about the oil which is being taken from un-

Wabash river by the oil wells located on the Illinois side. Having failed to work out with Illinois officials an arrangement by which some revenue could be obtained from the oil being pumped by the Illinois wells, Hugh A. Barnhart, department director, was in Washington today to seek federal permission fcr the drilling of oil ii on the Indiana side of the ver.

Federal approval for drilling is necessary because of the federal

of more than one well on each 40 acres. There are wells all along the Illinois side of the river where it forms the boundary line between the two states south of Terre Haute. - The Wabash divides the major Indiana dnd Illinois oil fields between Vincennes and New Harmony. If permission for drilling on the Indiana side is obtained, drilling rights will be leased by the department to the highest bidder with the revenue going into departm:nt funds. Such revenue, if obtained, would be of material value in maintaining

Indiana’s conservation program, Mr. Barnhart said.
