Porter in the Ellery Queen series) is his suspicious wife.

It seems as though the makers of this picture have taken the long way around in building up the story and then solving it. There are- innumerable unnecessary situations and very little to suggest the gentle art of theater about the whole business. It could have been good, but- it dulls down, as if Republic was in a hurry to get it finished so that the

AT THE CIVIC THEATER these days, Director Richard Hoover can be found at almost any reasonable hour swinging a paintbrush backstage as he used to do in the thick of the depression. Times have changed at the, prosperous little theater and things are happening. The technical staff has all but disappeared into the national defense effort. Two experienced hands got jobs in defense plants, one

was drafted and another is now an air ~adet. Mr. Hoover expects to leave for the service in June himself. Which leaves the question: What happens now? Well, I have been assured that the Civic plans no curtailment. The reason is interesting. So many willing people have volunteered to help that it is a cinch all the work will get done. Some of the actors have already gone into the theater of conflict, but others have stepped forward to close ranks. There is a new spirit on N. Alabama st.—a volunteer spirit that hasn't waxed so strongly there since the theater had to struggle for a living in the depths of the depression. Now it is struggling again and .that is good for it, for little theaters lose much when they get fat and prosperous. There is a challenge, now, that didn’t exist before. Folks have doubled up and are working harder; people whose hobby is the theater and for whom the Civic provides an outlet. They will keep it going and if their effort matches the work done in the lean years, it will produce in this war emergency a new and more vital theater. ” ” EJ

apolis Philharmonic, which was organized about two years ago and has been growing ever since. Not a great deal has been heard about this ‘unique organization, which will present a public concert at 8:15 p. m. Monday at the Cathedral high school. It is entirely non-professional and the idea is to enable folks who play musical instruments to play together once or twice a week. Fun is had by all, in addition to music. The orchestra was organized by Herman Rinne in October, 1940, with 13 people. The word got around and within little more than a year, the orchestra boasted 68 members with almost complete instrumentation. Then selective service pulled out a few of the members. Others from nearby towns had toc drop out when tire rationing started. The orchestra dropped to 45 members. Now it’s back up to 56 and still growing. The people who play in it do other things for a living. Some teach in school music departments, one is an attorney, several sell insurance, another is a printer by trade and others work in defense industries. There are plumbers, mail clerks, wholesalers and jobbers, ‘high school students, housewives, business girls, and a couple of factory executives. Matter of fact, the personnel could have been lifted out of the city directory. Matter of fact, it is out of the city directory. Just citizens who play instruments, like music and find themselves having a good time. They are hoping to give a few concerts. From time to time, any funds collected will be given qver to’ benevolent groups. Monday night's concert is designed to raise money for Navy relief. ” ” ”

Jordan Tonight

THIS IS our town and it wouldn't be complete without Jordan, which is a strangely fitting name for a musical conservatory. The Jordan annual festival of American music opens tonight at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, plays tomorrow night at Murat theater. Fabien Sevitzky. Indianapolis symphony orchestra conductor, and Charles Hedley, Jordan voice department, have charge of the festival which would appear to be in good hands. Indianapolis’ leading instrumentalists are participating, and cause is worthy. It’s American music.

best dancing that has come to Keith's stage since the current management took over. Miss Honan does well with her satire of stuffy sopranos, torch singers and “personality” vocalists. Her “impression” of Bette Davis raising cain with David O. Selznick for not giving her the Scarlet O'Hara part in “Gone With the Wind” is particularly good. The Chicago show on the whole has some life and some talent to it, which seemed to please the patrons, It is light, amusing stuff, although the ‘chorus has not improved. It has been a weak spot in Keith's stage presentations since the start.

STUDIO 'SCARED’; SAROYAN DEPARTS

SAN FRANCISCO, May 8 (U. P)). —William Saroyan, the effervescent playwright, blamed his motion picture trouble on a “scared” studio today and vowed he'd try again sometime at another studio. Mr. Saroyan walked out—or was fired—from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio where he was under contract to adapt, produce and. direct “The Human Comedy,” a story he had sold M-G-M for $60,000. “It turned out the contract said something else,” he said. “The studio put so much dough into the picture it got scared and decided to put one of its conventional boys in charge. So I walked out.”
