BUYING OF GOOD SEED IS URGED
Good Varieties and Care in Planting Mean Saving
Time and Money.
The need to buy only good seed should be s;ressed now as never before. Poor seed is a waste of time and money. The better seedsmen are constantly improving their varieties for your benefit. Seldom is the seedsman to blame for failure of seeds to germinate. Usually the planter has been careless in some way, either planting too deep or being lax in watering. No seed should be planted deeper than about four times its thickness and all seeds are usually rather tiny, a bare sprinkling of soil after pressing the seed into the furrow will suffice. Early planted seed need not be watered unless: ‘the ground is very dry.
Treated Against Disease
Many seedsmen treat their seeds to control diseases and it is wise to ascertain, when purchasing, if such is the case. If not, then we suggest that certain vegetable seeds be treated. Paul Dempsey of the Waltham, Mass, experiment station, recommends the use of various chemical powders on the following vegetables: Red copper oxide for beets, carrots, chard, cucumbers, eggplant, lettuce, muskmelon, peppers, spinach, squash, tomatoes.
Semesan for broccoli, cabbage,
i |caulifiower, corn, onions, peas. Also ' [recommended at the present time
for use with all flower seeds. Just Follow Directions
Zinc oxide for lima beans, oabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, porsnips, radishes, turnips. These chemicals come in small cans and the gardener must follow the directions printed on the label. Very little is needed. A cup of pea seed will require only about three pinches. Place seed in a small can or bottle, shake in g little powder, cover up and shake well so that all seeds are coated. Unused powder may be returned to the container and used again. The seed need not
be planted immediately. However,
treated seed should be planted within a couple of weeks. The old gardener says that a seed | ™ is but a sleeping baby plant and we need but put it in the soil, supply warm and moisture and lo, it wakes up and starts to grow. Chemicals are of great aid and the gardener who worried because many of his apples ang other fruits were lost due to the pre-harvest drop, may now use a hormone spray to reduce this loss.

ATTIC IS USABLE AS AN EXTRA ROOM
A remodeled and modernized attic has long .been one of the best solutions to the problem of providing another room for the growing family with a very modest pocketbook. Today the remodeling of attic space
into additional rooms has taken on added significance. Unused or unfinished attics can easily and quickly be transformed into complete, livable rooms, offering housing accommodations to defense industry workers. There are many large homes with unused attic space that could easily be transformed and help supply the present demand and at the same time provide the owners of the properties with additional income, Insulating board is one of the many materials that may be used for an economical, neat and quick
remodeling job on the attic.

Owner of Home Termed Lucky
IF YOU OWN your own home, consider yourself lucky. Statistics show that the amount home owners spend for shelter is between $150 and $800 a year less than the amount renters spend for similar accommodations. “In other words,” says the May issue of House Beautiful after a recent survey of 26,000
families made to compare costs among renters and owners in the same income groups, “if the average home owner were to rent a house comparable to his own, he would pay. twice as much for {it as he does at present.”
