engagement of the war, until full reports are in. . On the basis of announcements from Gen. MacArthur's headquarters and from Washington, the Japanese appear to have suffered a terrific blow. Of the 17 Japanese ships claimed to have been sunk or damaged, two were aircraft carriers, four cruisers and two destroyers. Such losses might well cripple whatever invasion fleet Japan has seen fit to send to the Solomons. Unless the Japanese have withdrawn from the Bay of Bengal, the larger part of its fleet must be in those waters, in the China sea and on guard around the home islands. However, according to the MacArthur communique, “our own losses have not been reported.” The only estimates come from axis sources and they are rather contradictory.
Effemy Travels Hard Road
The enemy apparently claims two aircraft carriers, two battieships and a cruiser. If ‘this were true, it would be reason for grave anxiety, but past axis claims have been exaggerated too often to warrant credence. The full story of the battle should provide interesting data on the power of air and naval forces, striking together in co-ordination. There seems no doubt that the planes engaged were mainly from carriers. They may, however, have been aided by heavy bombers, basNl on' northeastern Australia, 1000 miles away. Whatever the outcome of the battle, American and Australian air power is going to make the continent, hard to invade.
