: McKellar Confident He Can Eliminate Funds for Two Agencies:

Times Special Pr WASHINGTON, ‘May 7.-=Presi-~dent Roosevelt's plan to keep the * depression-born youth agencies alive in wartime, even with $102,150,000 . appropriation, may meet defeat on capitol hill, a checkup of congressional reaction revealed today. ‘Those who have been fighting for complete abolition of both’ NYA and COC still are unsatisfied with what someone termed the New Deal idea of “winning the war without losing & bureau.” Senator Kenneth "D. McKellar (D. Tenn.), who has a bill pending to abolish NYA and CCC, expressed satisfaction at the 75 per cent cut in their funds recommended by President Roosevelt. But he still insists th#® he may be able to wipe out the other 25 per cent in the senate appropriations committee, of which he is the ranking member.

» » Much of the warfare between major campaigns in the African

desert consists of raids on enemy positions. Some are small affairs.

Others ate on a bigger scale, daring penetrations far behind the enemy lines, calculated to do serious damage to airfields, stores, dumps or: communications. This picture was made during one of these raids. A 25-pounder kicks up plenty of dust as it makes things tough for the Germans. .

TERS, Australia, April ‘7.—For first time today, Gen. Douglas MacArthur did not mention the Philippines in his regular communique. But in a special statement- on the surrender of Corregidor, which

he left two months ago to assume}.

his united nations southwest Paoific command, Gen. MacArthur said: “Corregidor needs no comment from me. It has sounded its own story at the mouth of its guns. It has scrolled its own epitaph’ .on the enemy’s tablets. But through

the bloody haze of its last rever-| berating shot I shall always seem

to see the vision of grim, gaunt, ghastly men still unafraid.” Just starting to organize his growing forces. for the offensive

throw. of the. 50 west Pacific, after the allied position has been made secure beyond doubt, Gen. MacArthur ‘today made no mention of his pledge to lead his forces back to the Philippines, but Australian newspapers were generous in their praise of the brave defense. “These sacrifices are necessary to our victory,” said the Sydney Morning Herald in a typical editorial. “They are part of the price demanded for our past lack of preparedness.”

ERRS IN BLACKOUT

SUNBURY, Pa., May 7 (U. P.).— W. S. Munson, Tharptown, Pa., admitted to ‘Judge ‘H. W. Cummings today that he fired five revolver shots at two air raid wardens during a‘ blackout test, but pleaded it was a case of mistaken identity. “I thought it was a Japanese invasion,” he said.
