Massing Off Australia

New Guinea; the American forces in New Caledonia or even on Australia itself,
Simultaneously, the Japanese had|
suddenly diminished the intensity of their persistent, savage, but costly aerial attacks on Port Moresby, Gen. MacArthur noted. ‘Diminishing Japanese aerial acfivity over Port Moresby had been taken at first mean that the enemy. had ed to take a rest after losing high percentage of
attacking planes to allied fighters. FES IRE
Now it appeared that the Japanese probably were concentrating and conserving their aerial power. It was known that they had received airplane reinforcements, United States bombing planes have done terrific damage to such enemy bases as Rabaul and Lae and Salamaua, on the Huon gulf northern New Guinea, across the island from Port Moresby. An army spokesman said here that it was believed Salamaua, used by the enemy as a base for plane attacks on Port Moresby, had been almost wiped out. Raids on Rabaul and Lae, he said, had proved even more successful than first reports from pilots indicated. Use Obsolete Planes It was noted that the Japanese were now using obsolete fighters of Mitsubishi-39 type to reinforce their fast Navy-O fighters, their best. This indicated a shortage of fighters, but it was understood that the enemy air corps was being reinforced with bombing planes of latest type. The fall of Corregidor in the Philippines released many planes and men for service elsewhere, There was no doubt that the allied air raids had slowed .the Japanese and put back for weeks a Japanese offensive in the Australasian zone. Now, however, there were indications that the Japanese had decided they must strike or face progressively heavy attacks by the growing allied air corps.

OSTROM'S LEAD
Only 376 Votes Behind; Meyer Remains Ahead
In Congress Race. (Continued from Page One)
however, and said that unofficial figures showed Mr. Ostrom increasing his lead again this afternoon.
Meyer Continues to Gain
He insisted that several of the strongest “organization” precincts still were to be heard from and also claimed that Gen. Tyndall had not shown the strength anticipated by the organization in some of the far North and East side areas. A major upset appeared to be in the making in the G, O. P. congressional race, with Howard M. Meyer drawing away from his two opponents. He held a 2229 to 1656 vote edge over John G. Coulter, organization choice, in 66 precincts, and John Banketi was running third with 1037. Three neck-and-neck Democratic races were holding the attention of that side at 31 precincts. Judge Joseph Markey was trailing organ-ization-backed Jacob Weiss, 1915 to 1947, in superior court one, and Tony Flack, favored by the ward chairmen to-best Glenn Ralston for auditor, was behind 2140 to 2271.
Close County Clerk Race
Robert Allison also was leading a slated opponent, Ray Herner, in the treasurer race, 2204 to 1872. Only 12 votes separated John Kelly and E. O. Spethen in the race for state senator, with the former in front, For the Republicans, the closest battle was being waged by Arnold J. Tilson and Walter Hemphill for county clerk, the latter, who was slated, leading 2136 to 2090 in 66 precincts. Judge Dan V. White was 420 votes behind Edwin McClure, Bradford choice, in the probate court race, while William D. Bain, the organization’s choice for criminal court, held a 1983-t0-1596 margin over Clyde Carter for criminal court, - Jesse Hutsell continued to set the pace in the sheriff field, with a 700margin over his closest competitor, Otto Petit. Meanwhile, election officials said that the counting of votes for precinct committeemen would be completed today. They must be certifiled by tonight in preparation for Saturday’s county conventions at which the precinct committeemen will select their chairmen and other party officers. Rep. Louis Ludlow, who didn’t get home early enough to do any cam- , was setting a torrid pace in vote-getting for the other candidates and had piled up a 3998 total to 906 for Earl J. Cox in the Demo-
passed to the hands of the British today when the great French naval base at Diego Suarez, on the northern tip of the island, surrendered.

one could predict “when there will be a substantial supply available. The congressional proposal to permit the government to requisition private ‘automobiles was advanced prior to Mr. Patterson's statement on tires. A stormy legislative battle was forecast on this issue despite defense officials’ assertions that the war effort might require taking over of numbers of private cars. A bill introduced by Senator Sheridan Downey (D. Cal.) would grant the president blanket authority to acquire $5,000,000,000 worth of automobiles and automobile parts. Another bill by Senator Reynolds would permit the requisitioning of any automobile whose driver exceeds a speed of 40 miles an hour. Automobile owners would be compensated for their property which could be taken in whole or in part, Senator Reynolds explained.

Stronghold Falls to British After 48-Hour Fight.

in event of an attempted Japanese landing somewhere south of Diego Saurez., Most of the Vichy forces are believed to have been concentrated around the northern scene of fighting. Even before London’s announcement that Diego Saurez had fallen and that resistance at Antsirane had been overwhelmed in a night assault, it was apparent that the stand of the Vichy forces was nearing its end. Vichy dispatches told of a “critical situation,” then reported that no further word had come form Madagascar. The French capitulation was complete, Gen, Alfred Paul Guille-
surrendering their forces after the
Ambre peninsula from Courier bay and attacked Antsirane from the south while a “sacrifice” force of marines moved in nearer to the naval base. The occupation of the Madagascar naval base provided evidence of Britain’s new striking power which Mr. Churchill, in a statement today, said will strike at the axis “in every theater of war.” Tribute to Gallantry Mr. Churchill, speaking in the house of commons, paid tribute to the gallantry and discipline of the French forces. . He said he and his fellow Britons grieved that bloodshed had occurred between the troops of two countries whose peoples, at heart, were united against a common foe. Diego Suarez town, the administrative center of northern Madagascar, fell yesterday and the adjacent Antsirane naval station was captured by the commandos, parachutists and marines in their climactic night attack. The combined land, sea and air invasion of the strategic island reached its climax in the dramatic night attack in which royal marines made a frontal landing before the naval base, in a gallant diversional movement, while the commandos and parachutists made the main attack from the rear.
AIR RUNWAYS EXGEED ROADS
_In Transportation by Big Stress on Planes.

+ A NEWFOUNDLAND AIRBASE— Nobody has figured it out officially but it’s quite generally believed that Newfoundland is the only civilized country in the world in which the total mileage of airbase runways exceeds the total highway mileage. The war is chiefly responsible for this, but the significance of it will outlive the war. It’s a safe bet that Newfoundland is one of those areas destined to skip a whole chapter in the history of transportation, and go on into the air age without even having known that modern highway development which has been so much a feature of North American civilization. One way of estimating what air
poorly developed country like this is to study the saga of group Capt. Foss, commanding officer of this big royal Canadian air force patrol and security base, and his little Dehaviland fox-moth.

able condition. It is a small, fabriccovered biplane with a single 130horsepower engine. : Theoretically, Foss’ job is administrative, but he’s an old bush pilot of the type that just can’t bear to

BUFFALO, N. Y., May 7 (U..P.). —Aeronautical engineers believed today that the newly developed Curtiss P-40F Warhawk pursuit plane is capable of outfighting any existing enemy craft. The P-40F was demonstrated pub licly for the first time yesterday by Curtiss-Wright Co. test pilots, who flew from a field adjoining the factory where the new ships already are in mass production. : “We believe we have incorporated in the Warhawk the answer to de-
