INLAND BARGES LIFT OIL HOPES

Senate Approval Sought To Increase Gas Flow Needed in East.

By MARSHALL McNEIL Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, May T7.—Inland waterways, sometimes damned as pork-barrel projects, may yet be

oil rationing along the Atlantic seaboard. Senate approval of a proposal greatly to increase shipments of oil over these waterways will be sought in the vote on the Danaher-Ship-stead amendment to earmark $20,000 of maritime commission funds for conversion of steel barges to oil carriers, construction of wooden barges to replace the steel ones, and building of additional towboats. 100 Barges Being Built Already movements of oil by barge have increased greatly. They amounted to only about 31,500 barrels a day in 1940, and 54,000 barrels a day last year, and will reach 150,000 to 200,000 barrels daily in the next few months, according to Oil Co-ordinator Ickes. Further increases are expected when the 100 new barges now under construction are ready. Senator Danaher (R. Conn), who said his scheme is supported in the WPB and other war agencies, believes that hundreds of existing bulk carrier barges made of steel can be converted to transport nil by using only a little additional steel. : When converted, they can be replaced by wooden bulk carriers, which he said dozens of shipyards are ready to make. _ The National Rivers and Harbors Congress convention in Chicago, May 29, will consider a four-point program for increasing oil shipments to the east over inland and
