VOICE from the Batcony by RICHARD LEWIS

AFTER VIEWING LOEW'S feature attraction, the 1942 version of “Rio Rita,” I am reminded of the.recent primary election campaign, not only by Abbott & Costello, whose double talk makes as much sense as the. political speeches I heard, but by the overall dullness. of

the effort.

It seems to me that the principal difference between these movie

comedians’ and some of our politicians is that the former get bigger audiences without ‘being nearly as entertaining. However, I am not here to discuss politics, altheugh. I can’t help adding that the first mayoralty ' candidate ‘who cuts ' loose fromm abstractions long enough to pledge himself to keep the streets swept gets my ‘unqualified indorsement,

It was 1929. when. “Rito Rita” -

was first ‘released, with Burt Wheeler and the late Robert Woolsey as the comedy team. It

was as gay and. delightful a mu- .

sical comedy as I can remember and beside it the current revival is flabby. The original “Rio Rita” bandits in ‘it. This one intro-

duces a team of Nazis who get.

blown up in the end by an alarm clock. Abbott. & Costello have fun in their juvenile way, but they are not enough. to carry the picture. + Kathryn Grayson does the singing in a coloratura voice which lacks quality. John Carroll, the male lead, is fair.

Second Bill “THE MAN WHO RETURNED

TO LIFE” is a less spectacular, .

but rather interesting story, about

a decent sort of guy who gets

mixed up in an accidental death and stands trial for murder. Released on bond after the jury disagrees, the guy is hunted down by a gang of vigilantes out to lynch him. He escapes to the West, where he assumes a new name, settles down and does well for himself, Years later, he reads where his old enemy has been convicted of his murder in a mistaken identity circumstance. His problem is whether to face the loss of his home and family by revealing himself to save the enemy or sitting tight. This is an old problem play with a new twist. John ‘Howard takes the lead and there is some pretty good acting done.
