SUBS SCORE

See Sun, for Weeks, but

Don’t Complain.

: NEW YORK, May 7 (U. P).~— America’s submarine crews, who live in a world of “machines, oil, sweat

. and cramped quarters” and some-

times spend weeks without a glimpse of the sun in order to send their

torpedoes into Japanese ships, are

scoring important blows in the Far East, a U. S. submarine officer re-

cently returned from Java said today.

His story was released for publication today by the third naval

district.

“We don’t regard ourselves as

_ heroes, although we do feel very

keenly that we deserve all the support possible in the manner of material and equipment,” he said. “We have seen times when a few hundred planes would have saved the day. Score Major Blows

“The subs have scored important

- blows against the Japs, the morale

of our men is at a high pitch and the pighoat crews are continuing through the severest sort of conditions without any ‘griping.’” The young officer, who was a football player and wrestler at Annapolis, served as communications officer aboard a new $6,000,000 submarine which was one of the United States submersibles sent out on patrol from Manila after Pearl Harbor. : “Each sub proceeded alone to its zone and no other U. 8. craft were in the zones,” he said. “All we had to do was to hit everything we saw. That patrol, our first from Manila, was to last 52 days. Not once during that time did we see the sun. We ran submerged all day; surfaced only at night to charge the, batteries.”

No United Axis Strategy, Allied War Experts Believe

By DAVID M. NICHOL Copyright, 1942, by The Indianapolis Times and The Chicago Daily News. Inc. WASHINGTON, May 7. — The existence of a “grand strategy” linking the programs of the axis in Europe and Japan in the Pacific is scouted by some united nations experts here. But bits of evidence continue to pile up that ior all its touted alti. ance with the axis Japan is fighting its own war in the Far East. Experts recently arrived from Bur-~ ma admit the possibility of an invasion of India by the Japanese, but insist that it will come only if Japan’s self -in ~ Nichol terest indicates such a movement is desirable. Japan, they say, is now installed in full control of the huge peninsula that ‘makes up southeastern Asia and is prepared to strike in any one of a number of directions. One of the most obvious, which some of the experts predict will be first, is the supply line that links the United States and Australia through the chain of Pacific island bases.

Experts Are Puzzled

Although aware of the danger that some of the “misunderstandings” between the herrenvolk (master race) of Europe an eir counterpart in Asia may be deliberate propaganda, these experts feel they go far to explain some of the anomalies that exist. Much speculation was aroused, for example, by the @absence of the Japanese ambassador, Lieut. Gen. Hiroshi Oshima, from the Salzburg conference between Hitler and Mussolini last week. If the meeting wag the preface to spring and summer campaigns, the Japanese presumably would have:been represented, if their part was to be important.

Russia Warns Japan

Russia has warned the Japanese flatly to watch their language and their actions. Most observers agree there must be a showdown at some time in the future. ; For the moment, however, with Russia bracing for the onslaught of

the new Nazi campaign, Japan con-

tinues her assurances that the nonaggression pact which Yosuke Matsuoka signed last year to the amazement and anger of the Germans, is the guiding principle in the relationships between Moscow and Tokyo. A. T. Steele reported last week from Russia that the Japanese diplomats are creating the impression there that they consider the Nazis’ invasion of the Soviet Union as a “blunder.”

Two “Master” Peoples?

The Nazis are none too happy about Japan’s exploitation program in the Netherlands East Indies which the Germans always had hoped to get for themselves. They have not yet agreed to withdraw their claims. Dutch sources report heavy purchases of East Indies securities by Germans on the Amsterdam market recently. The “misunderstanding,” real or potential, stem from the very core of the doctrines on which the people of Germany and Japan ‘alike have been fed. The Nazis have drilled into their followers the concept of a master people who will rule the world. The Japanese have done the same and there isn’t room for both of them.

other heartily.
