By Frank Widner

THE FILM YOU HAVE DOUBTLESS been waiting for, “To Be Or Not To Be,” which Carole Lombard finished just two weeks before her death on a Nevada mountain top, is in the neighborhood theaters

this week.

‘This excellent comedy, which in a way is a fitting memorial for the gallant lady, goes a long way to prove just what a versatile actress

the screen world has lost. Another just reason why you should see this film is Jack Benny. He's at his best as only Jack Benny can be.” And finally, the story is natural comedy set in a burlesque background of the Nazi invasion of Poland. It will be at the Zaring through Saturday, the Granada tomorrow for a full week, the Belmont Sunday through Tuesday, and the Rivoli Sunday through Wednesday. ® x = IF YOU WOULD like to see the destruction of a German U-boat off the Canadian coast, “Dangerously They Live” is one picture to mark down to see. It’s a thriller from the word “go” with John Garfield, Nancy Coleman and Raymond Massey taking the leading roles. There's plenty of action and suspense.

It will be at the Rivoli, Belmont

and Vogue through Saturday, the Irving tomorrow through Sunday, the Speedway Friday and Saturday, the Fountain Square Saturday through Tuesday, and the Daisy Sunday and Monday. . ” ” ” RAY MILLAND has the job of politely poking Paulette Goddard in the kisser in “The Lady Has Plans,” a story full of spies, secret plans and everything. As a foreign correspondent, Ray has Miss Goddard as his “leg man” and Nazi spies mistake her for some foreign agent with secret plans inked on her back. Naturally, it all turns out all right. It will be at the Rivoli and Strand through Saturday the Irving tomorrow through Sunday, and the Belmont, Speedway and Uptown Sunday through Tuesday. ” #" »

ACCORDING TO Earl Cunningham, the cooling system at the Granada is in somewhat of a nervous state. It’s ready anytime the weather is and will be turned on whenever the elements can make up their mind. ” EJ ”

True Romance

I AM HUNTING FOR a paper clip which has disappeared under the stack of old newspapers and rubble on my desk so that I can add it to my paper clip collection (in which I take great pride) when a business office executive of our paper approaches my desk, salaams thrice in the prescribed mannet and hands me a publicity release from “True Story” magazine. From the mute appeal in our business

wants this publicity run in the paper, so I chase him back downstairs with a rolled newspaper 1 keep handy for such emergencies. But then I start reading this release, which is my undoing. It is written, as one might expect, in purple ink, and it goes on like this:

“Sammy Kaye, popular orchestra leader, revealed today that thousands of women who listen to | his love songs have written to him declaring that the words and music they hear affect their lives, make them happy or disappointed, according to the tune and lyrics. “Kaye points out in a special article for True Story that this is probably the most romantic country in the world. . . . Further than that, he writes, his women listeners take the time to write to him and request certain songs because they are sure such tunes will be the means of bringing about reconciliations with husbands or sweethearts.” Naturally, my first reaction to this piece of “news” is to groan aloud and beat my head against the wall. But in the interest of objectivity, I decided to make an investigation and then confront our business executive with the facts of life.

Hey, Kaye!

SO I SNEAK out to the nearest newsstand where I purchase, surreptitiously, a copy of “True Story,” running all the way back to the office with the romantic cover under my coat. “Let's Escape to Paradise,” invites the cover. On page 4, opposite a treatise on dishpan hands, or, “does he

still hold YOUR hands in the

movies?” I find Mr. Kaye's article, “What Love Songs Mean to Women.” . Now, I remember Sammy Kaye from way back when he and his band were getting started in the hills of that romantic part of-the country called the Pittsburgh district. The average Indianapolis smog blackout is rarified air compared to that area’s atmosphere which has everything in it but oxygen. Even in those days, Sammy used the “swing and sway” slogan which helped make him famous. He was the most imperturbable bandleader I ever saw. Sometimes the party would get pretty rough, but Sammy and the boys would keep on playing the old love songs while the bouncers went busily about their duties.

Love Letter

SO IT WAS with interest that I began reading Sammy’s article. He and the band are playing in

a hotel ballroom (this must have been after he broke into Cleveland) when he receives a letter from a female patron. The frill’s letter says that she and Fred came for a formal parting, after months of not getting along, and they were dancing together for the last time, when ... “You played, ‘Let’s Try Again.’ There was little space on the floor, We were pressed close to each other. ‘Let's Try Again.’ Everything that seemed an obstacle to our love vanished and I said, ‘Fred, Let's Try Again.’ “Fred said, ‘I Love you. Let's try again.’ “I said, ‘bless you Freddy, I so much wanted you to say that.’ “Thank you for playing that

song. Thank you and thank you again.” Mr, Kaye says that the letter is one of his prized possessions and I should imagine that it would take a prize in almost any collection. Well, the article goes on like that with the inference that what. would life be like without popular songs and bandleaders to play them. All of which I dismissed as so mych hogwash. But I continued my investigation anyway. I interviewed a number of ladies, showing them the text of Mr. Kaye's ideas and asking for comments. ¥ 8p

Survey Shows

WELL, YOU CAN guess how my survey came out. I have now incontrovertible proof that when I say this is the old baloney, I am wrong and I go to the foot of the class. Mr. Kaye's conclusion that “our popular songs have not only been great romance inspirers, but they have also been great healers and reconciler’s of love” in the current issue of “True Story” magazine has proved to my complete dissatisfaction. I am still groaning.

BEL-CANTO GROUP TO GIVE CONCERT

The Bel-Canto ensemble will present, a spring musicale at 8:15 p. m. tomorrow at the Indiana World War Memorial auditorium. The program, dedicated to national music week, is under the direction of Charles T. Amos, president of the Indiana State Association of Negro Musicians.
