JAPS STEP UP | ACTION IN BAY

New Assaults Seen as Effort to Seize Rest of Islands in Philippines.

WASHINGTON, May 5 (U. P.).— Resumption of heavy assaults on Manila bay forts and new. landings in Mindanao were believed today to be indications that the Japanese were beginning a campaign to wipe out the remaining American-Fili-| pino resistance in the Philippines. | After the fall of Bataan there was | a comparative lull in the Manila bay area while the Japanese attacked the Visayan islands ' of Cebu and Panay. That action led to belief that the Japanese might | be preparing to lay siege to Corregidor rather than attempt a direct assault. ! Corregidor represented what military observers here believed was a | far more difficult system of defense to storm than did the islands of Hongkong and Singapore.

Renew Intense Attacks

The renewed intense attacks on Corregidor's Ft. Mills, and the | neighboring forts Drum, Hughes and Frank, make it look now as though an effort to land and overwhelm the defenders may be attempted. . Corregidor, the main island, is about two miles off the rugged Bataan shore at the nearest point. Any attempt to land Japanese forces would be met by the big coastal guns and mobile artillery which have replied so effectively to the Japanese. The activity reported yesterday gave no signs that the defenses were weakening. But Lieut. Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright's forces took a five-hour pounding from manys guns of about nine and a wv > ¢ Ye {

Last midnight’s communique said for the first time in weeks that Soviet forces “carried out offensive operations. . . .”. The communique said the Soviet lost only 71 planes from April 26 to last Saturday, while the Germans were losing 264. : On several sectors of the Leningrad front, it said, the Russians destroyed 10 fortifications and two observation points, killing 1100 Germans. The Germans attacked a populated place on the Kalinin front, but the Russians counter-attacked, drove them back and captured large
