. MENTION “TRANSPORTATION SHORTAGE” to a A trucker and he'll blow sky high. And perhaps he has reason. Virtually all of the trucking groups complain that ing while the railroads are pulling long trains of war material, FE 20 to 30 per cent of the truck capacity is idle. vr: 18 Moving goods on the highways has increased 10 to 15 _ per cent over last year. the federal government is getting interested in it a nd something may happen.’ The other, and a ls o familiar, complaint is that the government Roger Budrow prefers railroads to trucks for its hauling. Directives Needed

The publication said that gener-: ally no plates are available under A-1 priorities unless covered by directives. Bars and sheets are close to plates in volume of requirements for war purposes and top priorities have accummulated to an extent that general allocation seems likely to be applied soon. In carbon bars little assurance of delivery can be given on orders below A-1-B and many mills are able fo handle only A-1-A ratings. Alloy bars can be delivered in little less than six to eight months at top priorities, except on directives.

TWO FROM HERE ON UTILITY CO. BOARD

Two Indianapolis men today were elected directors of Public Service. Co. of Indiana, Inc. Dudley R. Gallahue, president of American States Life Insurance Co., and Kurt PF. Pantzer, attorney, were elected to fill vacancies caused by resignations of Laurence K. Callahan of Chicago, recently commissioned a major in the air corps, and Leo S. Ganter| Jr. of Muncie, who is to report soon for duty as cap= tain in the army reserve COrps. The other seven directors and of=ficers were re-elected.

Maintenance, labor and tax costs have gone up for truckers as well as everyone else. ‘However, they did get a break in tire rationing (10 per cent of the present rolling stock has been put in a special reserve). The latest government order affecting trucks is that they must haul a return load of not less than %5 per cent capacity on every trip over 15 miles. That makes it hard on stores doing a good suburban business around the city. A group of these private truck owners are to get together here this week to see what can be done about it—if 2 anything.
