At the Circus

IT WAS HOT UNDER the big, blue top, with the stifling heat only circus tents are capable of generating, and the lady next to me

was giving her baby its dinner and

watching the show with great zest.

I had spent some time outside the main tent watching the lions, the tiger and the elephants who have intelligent, knowing expressions

in their brown eyes. ‘cages and the tiger turned his back to the crowds and sulked. It was some time before the main show started. A rather large woman in the inevitable blue dress was singing into a public address system in a voluminous soprano. You got the impresion that the amplification was unnecessary, for this lady really sang loud. The band played several marches and then a fast-talking gent seized the microphone. and advertised a number of local products, including a roofing material “as tough as an elephant’s hide.” The fast talking gent also sold some kind of candy made in Chicago. It seems that a dime not only purchased a. box of candy put various prizes, including lingerie, nylon hose, a leather cigarette case, toys, cameras, cigar lighters, cosmetics, perfume, pencils and fountain pens. A dozen candy salesmen patrolled the aisles selling the candy and pretty soon the gent. at the mike instructed the salesmen to 3 dig out the “heavy boxes with the valuable prizes” and after each dalesman had sold 10 boxes, the show would start. Presently, the show started.

Sapa-inca THE FIRST NUMBER on the bill was “the crowning triumph of gorgeous pageanfry” built around the saga of Sapa-Inca. The announcer said Sapa Inca was the only South American Inca who knew where the treasure of the Incas was buried. Attacked by ruffians, Sapa Inca was rescued by a Spaniard to whom he willed his treasure. ° The pageant of Sapa-Inca burst forth in an eruption of trumpet “salvos and turned out to be the routine circus parade of elephants, horses, dancers, floats and clowns. I admit I kept looking for SapaInca, but apparently everybody including the circus people had rapidly forgotten about the whole episode. The crowd was excited, and the lady next to me was feeding her baby and pretty soon along came another lady with a baby and both sat down on the other side of me.

. Pretty soon, I was seated ber tween two ladies who were feeding their babies. I felt somewhat conspicious, but nobody seemed

Aussie Imps

FOLLOWING SAPA - INCA, spectacle No. 2 was the elaborately

costumed and spectacular equine ballet, “The Fete of the Garlands, the most. intricate and thrilling display ever performed with saddle horses, each horse ridden by an expert rider.” Spectacle No. 3—“The spectacular somersaulting trampline stars, The Sensational Aussie Imps.” Spectacle No. 4—“Amazing gymnastic feats aloft by agile performers on the aerial bars—combined with the no less dexterous feats by comiques of the air.” Spectacle No. 5—'‘Cole Brothers presents the world’s greatest performer on the ‘slack wire, thrilling you with incomparable feats of balance and skill, Mr. Hubery Castle.” Spectacle No. 6—"“A feature extraordinary in which a human being is carried around! the hippodrome track while suspended by his head in the mouth of a ponderous elephant.” Well, there are 31 spectacles of this ‘nature, including the famous Australian Wallabies, and it is all super-deluxe circus talent. And let me tell you, after those two little babies got through with their dinners, they went to sleep as quietly as you please and never a peep from either of them, except when the inevitable happened. That was during spectacle No. 22 and before spectacle No. 23— “sensational display of breathtaking aerial feats”—came on, the babies were all changed and quiet-

‘ly sleeping again.

‘There is nothing quite like going to the circus.

Hope's Film Rather Thin

Gagmen in ‘Favorite Blonde' Could Be Funnier.

THE BOB HOPE-Madeleine Carroll vehicle at the Indiana this week hits on five out of a possible eight cylinders. The funny men who wrote the gags: weren't so funny this time and not even Hapslappy Hope can jack up the jokes. However, it pulls through at the end of a cross-country grind on the basis of sheer effort. Migs Carroll

‘las a comedienne is strictly stodgy.

The situations are filled with unrealized possibilities. The name of this picture is “My Favorite Blonde.” One nearly forgets to mention it, since its relation to what goés on in the picture is definitely distant. When film titles are picked, Hollywood has its own little joke. This one is an intra-mural selection which revolves about an alleged incident on the Paramount lot. It seems that Mr. Hope has long admired the potentialities of Miss Carroll and has been hounding his superiors for a chance to play in a picture with her. She’s his favorite blonde. © Hence the title. Sounds fishy, doesn’t it? But that’s the alleged truth. Bing Crosby is in the picture, too, Seems that he

too. Well, that’s the way the picture is thrown together, like a child’s letter blocks arranged by a child who The ‘plot it disappears altogether, and fades in again. Generally speaking, Madeleine Carroll is a British agent (again) and Bob Hope is a ham vaudevillian with a pet penguin. This penguin is wonderful. Chased by Nazi spies, Madeleine-seeks protection in Hope's dressing room. With spies after both of them, the two take a crosscountry tour to California to deliver the message. s ” ” “SING YOUR WORRIES AWAY,” with Bert Lahr and Patsy Kelly is the pretty fair second picture. That makes two pretty fair pictures. ” ” ” P. S. In case you are wondering about “My Favorite Blonde,” they do deliver the message and Miss

Carroll is a natural blonde. —By R. L.

Every once in a while a good film will slip quietly into Indianapolis and be billed as a “B” picture along with the main feature. That's what happened at the Circle this week. The under-publi-“Always in My Heart,” the Warner Bros. vehicle which serves to introduce 15-year-

This time it is «Don’t Get Personal, ” a comedy set to. music ‘which

has Hugh Herbert in the leading

role. He plays the part of an ec-

centric who inherits the pickle fortune of his late uncle, a wacky role which: fits ‘the comedian like a glove.

Supporting Mr. Herbert are Mischa Auer, Jane‘ Frazee, Anne Gwynne, Robert Paige (he ‘was born in Indianapolis), Ernest Truex, Richard Davies and Sterling Holloway. In his zany role, the pickle king causes a romantic mixup among four young people and : outwits the Miss Gwynne attempts of men to cheat him out of his inhefitance.

marrying a rich suitor for the security of her children. Many a heart warming scene is enacted by the father, who is an accomplished musician, and his daughter as she sings several songs, especially the title song. Added entertainment is found in the music of Borrah Minevitch and his Harmonica Rascals, who haven't been around much lately with tHeir delightful music. The other feature is “Larceny, Inc.” an - Edward G. Robinson comedy which tends to lag a bit in spots. With the help of Brod Crawford and Edward Brophy, “Little Caesar” churns up a few funny scenes, especially when the three are digging beneath’ the wall of a bank vault and strike the fuel tank for the oil burner. For a minute they think they have struck oil and are about ready to give up their plans for looting the vault. It’s an unusual role for the man -who has been .in so many tough gangster parts. CLAIMS 100 BOARDS PICK ARMY In

WASHINGTON, May 2' (U. P.). —Rep. Charles I. Faddis (D. Pa.) charged today that the war .department quietly has established more than 100 civilian boards across the country to recommend men— sometimes untrained friends of board. members—for army eommissions. A member of the house military affairs committee and the author of legislation to prohibit the army from granting commissions to inexperienced civilians, Mr. Faddis said he learned of existence of the boards two weeks ago and was advised only two days ago that they were being abolished. - He told reporters that if his pro-

{posal to ban army commissions for

men with prior military training is enacted, it will keep “a lot of movie stars and athletes from . getting commissions they don’t’ deserve.”
