Q—Our new house will have casement windows which open out.
A—Inside screens are necessary for this type of window. They may be side hinged one-piece screens, two-section horizontal sliding, or a type that rolls up similar to a window shade. If the windows are controlled by a casement sash operating device that extends through the wall to the inside, opening of the screen is not necessary. With this type of hardware a one-piece screen may be used which is removable for storing or for window cleaning. A similar type of screen with a sliding wicket through which the casement handle. may be reached also may be used when special casement operating hardward is used. #” ”
QI would lika to know some material other than tile that I can use to cover my bathroom wall.
A--If you want a tile effect, there are a ‘number of good wallboards made in imitation of tile that are attractive and serviceable. If you do not insist on having that appearance there are waterproof wall boards with plain surfaces that you can -use. These can be painted. You should use at least one coat of high gloss enamel as a finish. Only the best grades of enamel and paint should be used ‘as steam and hot water vapor are very hard on these surfaces.
»
@-~The color of our wood shingled roof is beginning to fade. How can it be renewed?
A--A shingle stain of the same color as that originally used may be applied over the shingles. The stain should be applied in a thin even coat. The shingles should be thoroughly dry. Prepared shingle stains can be obtained at most paint dealers.

THY FOR LOVELY: PLANT PICTURES,
Flowers and Foliage: All Of Same Size Lead ~ To Monotony.
In planning your flower garden |
it is well to remember that -it should
present, not only a pleasing appear~ §
ance as a whole,
but : that the §
plants are so chosen and placed as | to present a series of interesting ° and lovely pictures throughout the |g
garden. If plants with flowers and foliage of the same size and shape are used, the result is very monotonous, |even though the color is beautiful. The use of too many varieties or too few of each. variety also gives a spotty effect, as well as showing
poor composition. Plants having large, loose pani-
relieving the monotony of a flower border. Those, with very fine foliage can also be used. ‘If correctly selected and . placed, they help to blend together heavy color masses; to break long lines of keds and borders: to create an illusion of distance, and to afford shadow effects. If the flowers are of soft blue, lavender, grayish white, or even greenish white, the misty effect is more pronounced than if the colors are bright and clear. How to Get Misty Effect Baby’s-breath is excellent to use for misty effects in the border. The
well-balanced form of silvery gray foliage and clouds of minute, gray-
ish white flowers are Lest placed at irregular intervals in groups wii single plants, depending on the size of the garden. : | If too many are used, the picture | will become dull. The variety Bristol | fairy is more. beautiful than 1 older double. varieties and it oon] profusely for a longer season, especially when the old flowers are removed. When the plant is well established, it will take vp an area about three feet in diameter. Varieties bodzeri and rosy veil are dwarf varieties, useful in smaller areas. Baby’s-breath is especially nice with salpiglossis, phlox Miss Lingard, delphiniums, Shasta daisies and peach bells. Sea lavender (limonium latifolium) gives a restful quality to the border; the hazy, misty purple clouds of delicate bloom blend with all about it and yet seem to recede from its actual location. Groups of white, creamy white and pink heuchera, although not really misty in appearance, do present somewhat the same effect. They w in either sun. or shade! and add an airiness to many plant |® arrangements. Flowers for Softness Lavender, nepeta and several of the veronicas yield low masses of | lavender flowers that soften and |
ings. Among the taller perennials the best for misty effects are valeriana officinaiis, with feathery sprays of white or tinted flowers in early summer; artemisia lactiflora, displaying great creamy white plumes in late summer; thalictrum, cffering feathery masses of. rose, purple, white or yellow rlowers. For feathery effects in vines we have clematis paniculata ang polygonum auberti. Tamarix parvifiora, stllica, or odessana, shrubs for the border, present a misty pink effect before the fine feathery roliage is in evi-
and smoke tree, which give us the
idea of placing. misty flowering shrubs: even in our screen, plantings.
