Otherwise, it will resemble the present Allison plant in Speedway City because outside walls will be of brick and the windowless “blackout” design is to be used. The other chief difference is that the government will own the new one whereas General Motors owns the Speedway City -Alli-
son factory. Many other factories besides Allison’s are being built of wood prey . because it is the one raw material not under priorities, plentiful and easy to get in the shapes and sizes wanted. "Lately shipyards, canneries, airplane hangars and some warehouses have been built of wood. Over in Ohio, American Rolling Mill Co. a big steel firm, is making culvert pipe Roger Budrow of oak and walnut. instead of hard-to-get steel. . a southwestern ordnance plant was used extensively. Builders don’t have ‘to wait for wood, as even the high-priority concerns do for steel. It can be pre- _ fabricated at the lumber yards and lls. At Least 30, 30,000 Indiana Farmers Expected to Cast Ballots.
BY UNITED PRESS : At least 30,000 Indiana wheatgrowing farmers were expected to cast ballots to determine whether AAA marketing controls shall be exercised on 1942 wheat. crop production. | Confidence that Indiana, along with farmers in other states, would support: the program was expressed last night on the eve of the referendum by government triple-A officials in Indiana. Equal optimism that Hoosier wheat growers would reject the plan was voiced by an insurgent bloc of wheat growers who have atacked the program in the courts and consistently opposed the quotas. However, establishment of the quo,|tas will depend on a two-thirds majority approval on a national s scale, More than 40,000 state farmers, 5 each with 15 acres or more of wheat and having a normal production of 200 bushels, were eligible to vote in the referendum. But the total vote cast was expected to fall about 10,000 short of the eligible figure unless, as some farm organization leaders pointed out, localized opposition to the marketing schedule would produce a heavy turn-out of voters.

WASHINGTON, May 2 (U, P.).— Senator Lister Hill (D. Ala.), administration whip, predicted today that the senate will investigate “the
truth or falsity” of a New York newspaper charge that a United : States senator frequented a Brooklyn house aliegedly used by Nazi | spies. > The accusation was contained in 2|a copyrighted story by the New York Post which was based on an A affidavit made by Gustave Beeksalman. Convicted on a morals charge x |for operating the allegedly disorder7 |ly house, Beekman faces a maxi- - |mum sentence of 20 years. '| Several other senators expressed «| both interest and concern over the charges, but for the pesent Hill was the only one who discussed them for publication. According to the Post, the unnamed: senator often visited the house and was on good terms with a man said fo be engaged in Nazi espionage. The Post said soldiers, sailors and marines were wined and dined at Beekman’s house and were induced by the alleged axis agents to dis3, (close military information. Beekman, according to the account of his affidavit, did not overhear any of the senator’s conversations with the alleged spies and hence was unable to say whether they secured 3 any information from him. : Dispatches from New York quoted County Judge Samuel Leibowitz as saying Beekman would be extended leniency if he would “make a clean breast of his activities and unearth the whole spy ring with which he has been allegedly connected.” The Post 8aid it was after this promise that Beekman made his affidavit accusing the senator.
CURTISS-WRIGHT BUILDS IN KENTUCKY
NEW YORK, May 2 (U. P.)— » Cuy W. Vaughan, president of Curtiss-Wright Corp., announced today that the company will construct a new plant “somewhere in Kentucky” for the purpose of producing the recently developed military cargo transport plane made of plywood and other non-strategic materials. The planes, which are expected to be the largest wooden airships ever built, will be turned out for the U. S. army. A twin-engined unit, 9 the plane will be designated as C-76.
