Township justice of peace courts should be presided over by men whose legal training and experience fit them to serve with distinction, Ernest T. Lane, local attorney seeking the G. O. P. Center township Justice of peace nomination, said last night. Citing his 22 years of legal experience, he pledged that if elected “the working man’s rights will not be abused and the court shall’ not become a collectors’ racketeering agency.”

Speaking at a seventh ward Republican meeting last night he also said, “Every agency of a government should be put on a war basis, costs should be reduced where possible and the highest degree of efficiency and economy should be demanded.” ‘The former city councilman and state legislator declared that in connection with the study of possible improvements in local selfgovernment, consideration should be ‘given to procedures necessary to make valid and practical the widest possible powers of local self-govern-ment. He declared that if elected he would not be handicapped by any special obligations to individuals, groups or factions.

LONDON, May 1 (U, P.).—J. A. F. MacLachlan, royal air. force squadron leader, has only one arm but it hasn’t kept him from fighting the enemy over Malta. MacLachlan sost his left arm’ a year ago while piloting a Hurricane over Malta, but when the wounds healed he came home to England and persuaded specialists to devise an arm that would enable him to fly a plane again. He promised to telegraph them when he shot down another German, and today the word came that ‘he ‘had downed a Dornier fiying boat and damaged another which probably crashed. “1 promised I would wire when I got my first Hun while flying with it (the ‘artificial arm) and I want them to know how grateful I am,” he cabled.
250 BELGIANS DIE
IN CHEMICAL BLAST,
LONDON, May 1 (U. P.).—An explosion that destroyed a chemical and fertilizer factory at Tessenderloo, in Belgium, killed 250 persons and injured ‘more than 1000, the Berlin radio said today. The explosion occurred at 11:30 a. m. Wednesday, when a full force of workers were at their jobs. Besides destroying the plant, an engineering school and the Tessenderloo telephone exchange were damaged and many houses wefe demolished. Cause of the explosion has not been . determined. Special salvage gangs from the Kempenland coal mine area were used to search the debris for the dead and: injured. They worked through Wednesday night and were still searching the ruins last night, Berlin said.

A five-point program which he will institute if nominated and elected prosecutor was outlined by Glenn W. Funk, candidate for the Republican nomination, in speeches last night.
