A JUNGLE POSITION, iain, April 20 (By Clipper).—Wherever they came to a. halt the jungleer infantrymen dropped down joyfully. In five days they had hiked more than 75 miles through the gloom of the rainy forest, across mountain ridges and over fearful jungle trails. They were honestly tired, these men of Maine, the Midwest and Texas; and they had earned this respite. And what did Nat Barrows they do first off—after long gulps from their canteens? They began to-sing. : ‘A sight like that sort of gets you. There you are, out in the great jungle wilderness, amid a bunch of unshaven, trail-tough soldiers. They
n|ought to be grumbling and sullen
and downcast after the rigors of a five-day war game simulating a land attack on the Panama Canal. But, instead, they sing. There was plenty of grumbling back there on those trails in the night. Certainly, American doughboys would be a worry to their officers if they didn’t grumble. It’s a good way of letting off steam. Two officers, as bearded and muddy as their soldiers, lounged under a cuipo tree, smacking their lips over fresh water. Said Lt. William F. Doherty:
Walter Reed Hospital evenings.

« He'll Tip His Hat -
“That's quite right,” He said. “Forever after, I shall politely tip ever I pass a water faucet—but not until I've had a drink of it first. W. , you are the Goddess of all td here in the jungle.” f Nearby, a couple of doughboys were solemnly drawing up a verbal application to the navy dep: ent: “We hereby request transfer to a nice navy ship that will carry us without walking where we Jave to g0. » An order snapped out in the Kentucky accent of Capt. Cameron Coffman. They were to get under way again. The singing continued until the men fell into ranks.
Even If You Walk
“You can’t beat these jungleers,” said Lt. O'Toole. “They're the great est soldiers in the world—and can they take it!”
