From every government department, agency, division and bureau come similar stories of a‘suddenly intensified campaign against’ waste of everything from peteils to bookcases. Not only is Uncle Sam asking | the people to conserve paper, metals, rubber and other materials, but he is taking the lead in conserving them himself. And he is not above .| watching the pennies.
The Savings Vary
One agency tells its staff, “wear your pencils down to a nub before replacing them.” Another rules, “Go easy on the paper clips.” A third says, “Make fewer carbon copies of reports.” Individual instances of saving frequently amount to no more than a fraction .of a cent, as when a rubber band is retrieved from a wastebasket. Sometimes, however, they add up to six figures.

The Indiana Telephone association, trade organization of the telephone industry, is working with the
larmy signal corps to form corps

A census is being taken by the association of men employed by the telephone ‘companies of the state who are subject to call by selective service boards or who are interested in enlistment in signal corps service. From this census, men are being interviewed in an effort to place them in a technical service for which they are fitted and where they are most needed. A unit now being formed by the
company composed of 16 men. Oth{er units will be formed later. The annual convention of the association will be held Wednesday and Thursday at the Claypool hotel, with the operation of telephone companies in war time as the predominant subject. Lieut. Col. William C. Henry of the army signal corps has been secured as.speaker for Wednesday.
