HIGHER AT GHIGAGO

CHICAGO, April 30 (U. P).— Grain futures were generally firmer in early dealings on the board of trade today. Wheat was up % to % cent a bushel at the end of the first hour; corn unchanged to off %; rye up 1% to 3%; oats unchanged to up %, and soybeans off % to %. Wheat reached a high of 1.22% in early trade, but later some reselling by local traders developed. The fact that prices are well below the parity level and an expectation that mid-month parity prices will be increased tended to discourage selling operations in the wheat’ pit.

Administration sources said that if the ways and means committee goes through with the tax program on which they are now said to be near agreement, the president might feel obliged to follow his general profits recommendations with a specific proposal that congress could not easily dismiss.

Treasury Defeated?

The 40 per cent regular corporation tax rate was suggested by the committee’s own experts. It’s adoption would represent a major defeat for the treasury whose 55 per cent program is lower than the one the President discussed with congressional leaders a week and a half ago. Also reported by members of the ways and means members to be. in a strong position was a proposal to credit corporations with 20 per cent of their taxable excess profits for repayment after the war. The treasury recommended a credit of only 7 per cent. The profits tax program, on which the committée may vote today, would conform with President Roosevelt's “cost-of-living” message recommendations so far as the rate of excess profits taxation is concerned. But’ it would appear to be in appreciable conflict with Mr. Roosevelt on the definition of excess profits.

STOCKS CONTINUE ON REGOVERY PATH

NEW YORK, April 30 (U. P.).— Stocks scored gains ranging to 2 points today in extension of the

sharp late recovery which got under way in the previous session, Profit-taking slowed the advance moderately. American Telephone, which paced yesterday's recovery after setting a new seven-year low at 101%, moved up to 107, up 2% points. Steel shares, also prominent in the previous session’s rally, set up gains ranging to a point in Bethlehem and then eased from the highs of realizing. Directors of Bethlehem will take dividend action and issue the first quarter earnings statement after the close today. American Tobacco B held a point gain, a reduction in the dividend to 75 cents a share from $1 previously being offset by a good report of the company’s current sales. American Can aind a long list of special issues had gains of a point and more, while fractional gains predominated in the main list. Preferred utilities moved up 1 to 2 points when Leo Crowley, head of the Standard Gas & Electric system and chairman of the Federal Deposit. Insurgnce Corp., disclosed that he will oppose any more by the SEC to force the system to dispose of its assets under integration proceedings at current depressed values.

But, he said, you have to start somewhere in such a big plan, even though there will be inequities to be worked out Jater. Thus there probably will be a “roll-back” in wholesale prices or 2 mark up in retail ones in cases where the squeeze” is too great. ” o ” BRIDGEPORT BRASS, with factories here and in Bridgeport, |M Conn., is pushing its profits slightly higher. During my four years as Sheriff of Marjon County, Sullivan was my most honest, effi- - 5 cient and dependable deputy and at no time % did I have the occasion to question his integrity and honesty, and I will withdraw as a candidate before I will benefit or be a party to the defamation of his character and the humiliation of his family and friends. Even if the things that it is alleged he did in his youth are true, what politician, even when oath and of mature : age, has not done as bad or worse in some way: i or another? i Knowing the o caliber and character of most. of the politicians who have been conductin; this vicious campaign against Sullivan, Iv take Sullivan with his manhood, honesty a integrity.
