DAY, APRIL
Yankees Aren't Waltzing ) Away—Brownies Beat ’Em, 3-1
NEW YORK, April 29 (U.
Jeaglie pennant, are out in front by show no evidence of faltering to provide an expected close race.
Meanwhile, the New York Yankees counted on to waltz away from the opposition at the gun and win the American league banner in the proverbial walk—are down in second place.
As the first intersectional games opened yesterday, with eastern National league clubs in the Wes and the western American leaguers touring the East, the Dodgers continued merrily on their way with a 7-3 win over Cincinnati. Although playing without two of its stars, Dixie Walker and Augie Galan, Brooklyn had little trouble with the Reds—one of the pre-season pennant favorites.
Bagby Wins Fourth
Whit Wyatt lasted only one inning in which the Reds scored three unearned runs but Hugh Casey came back to stem the Cincinnati attack as his mates knocked Elmer Riddle out of the box. Dolph Camilli, recovered from a cold, blasted a two-run homer in the first. The Yanks meanwhile dropped one game below .Cleveland by losing, 3-1, to the St. Louis Browns as
Te: the Indians scored their ninth
straight triumph with a 6-4 deci-
mc lon over the Philadelphia Ath-
eV
~ letics. The world champions tumbled after holding a one-run lead behind the mound work of veteran Charley Ruffing. The tribe scored its ninth straight win by pounding Jack Knott .and Russ Christopher for 13 hits in Cleveland's Victory. It was Jim Bagby’s fourth straight win for the Indians. The Boston Red Sox took a firmer grip on fourth place, two games off Cleveland's pace, by stopping Detroit," 6-1. The defeat kept the Tigers one-half game below the Yankees, when a victory would have shoved the champs into third place. Jimmy Foxx hit his second homer of the season iin the Boston victory. Washington remained at the top of the second division as Buck Newsom scored his second win hy setting back the last place Chicago White Sox, 4-3. Rookie Bob Repass pounded a double to climax a winning two-run raily in the eighth. Giants Turned Back
- Pittsburgh remained three games back of the Dodgers in the National league battle with a 7-1 triumph over the hapless Phils. Stu Martin and Jimmy Wasdell each had three hits as the Bycs rapped . Earl Naylor and Wally Beck for 13 safeties. Tommy Holmes and Bill Nichol- ' son homered in the Boston Braves’ 6-3 conquest of the Chicago. Cubs while Bill Lee suffered his first de‘feat in three starts. Lou Tost was the Boston victor although he had to be rescued by Dick Errickson in the seventh. Johnny Hopp’s 10th inning double allowed the St. Louis Cards to turn back the New York Giants, 5-4. The Giants had tied up the game in the seventh. It was the first loss in three games for Cliff Melton, the big Giant right-hand-er.
Yesterday's Hero — Elden Auker, veteran St. Louis submarine ball pitcher injured in a winter automobile accident, who knocked the Yankees out of first place with a 8-1 victory that ended the Browns’ " nime-game losing streak.
‘Cellar’ Saints |
Get the Blues
By UNITED PRESS St. Paul, in seventh place in the American association, opens a “cellar series” with last-place Minneap- . olis today, holding a one-game margin over the Millers. Against Kansas Cigy yesterday the Saints found they could get on base simply by standing at the plate with a bat on their shoulder. They|pR did just that and won, 4-3, on three hits. Three Kansas City hurlers tossed away the Blues’ chances of moving into the league lead by issuing 12 walks, three of them with the bases loaded. Kansas City remained tied for first place with the Milwaukee Brewers, who lost a 10-inning contest to Minneapolis, 9-8. Catcher Bob Linton singled after one out - to drive in the winning run and end the afternoon with four hits in five ‘trips, including a homer,
Milwaukee's fourth defeat in the
last six games. They now have won eight and lost four.

ball team made quick use of Indiana errors yesterday and pasted I. U. in a 13-4 victory to open its season. The former major and minor league stars that compose the Great Lakes lineup grabbed a tworun lead in the first- when a Texas league double by Don Padgett scored Benny McCoy and Joe Grace. The Sailors added three more runs in the third on singles by MecCoy and Ernie Andres, a double by Frankie Pytlak and three Indiana errors. Then Grace! stole home for another run.
Bob Pavis Triples
Bases were full in the fifth. when Frank Baumholtz tripled and scored on a wild pitch. The final three runs for the visitors came in the eighth on a walk, three singles and a double, Coach Paul (Pooch) Harrell’s Hoosiers scored in the first when Outfielder Bob Pavis. tripled and scored when Shortstop Johnny Lucadello overshot first base. I. U. counted again in the fourth when a walk, three singles snd two errors allowed three runs. The Sailors’ starting lineup, which read like a page torn from baseball’'s “Who's Who,” contained the names of two former Indiana university players—Andres, and Don

BAKERIES URGED TO
Some plan of merging bakery deliveries to groceries was asked of the Indiana Bakers association today by William PF. Rightor, deputy state rationing administrator. Mr. Rightor addressed the 38th annual convention of the association in the Hotel Lincoln. He said: “With the present shortage of rubber, it has become highly impractical for the trucks of three or four different bakeries to make
grocery. “Your association should take the lead in promoting this plan for conserving the nation’s rubber supply. ”» Mr. Rightor also answered technical questions of the bakers in regard to the rationing of sugar. Under the new allotments, he pointed|{ma out, production will either be decreased to some extent or other substitutes will have to be used in place of sugar. Dr, John W. Ferree, director of the state board of -health, was also to speak to the group today. A style show was held this noon at L. S.’Ayres & Co. for women attending the convention. Col. Walter 8S. Drysdale, commander of Ft. Harrison, is to speak at a banquet tonight.
CIVILIAN DEFENSE COUNCILS NOT LIABLE
Local civilian defense councils are not liable in damages for injuries sustained by volunteers while performing civilian defense duties, Attorney General George Beamer ruled today. : In his opinion to Clarence A. Jackson, state civil defense director, Mr. Beamer said that civil defense volunteers are not employees of the state within the scope of the workmen’s compensation law, Civil defense workers volunteer their services and do not receive any pay.
