SMOKERS CAUSE
FOREST BLAZES
/582 Fires Swept 41,979 Acres in Indiana Last Year.
Times Special WASHINGTON, ' April 27.—Careless smokers still cause the most forest fires in. Indiana, a forest service report disclosed today. There was a total of 582 fires on state and private forest lands in the state in 1941, a decrease of 114 over 1940. Protected areas burned over last year totaled 41,979 acres, compared with 48,331 in 1940. Cause of fires on protected land were listed das follows: Smokers 271, debris burning 198, railroads 45, lumkering 39, incendiary 14, campers 6 and miscella-
neous 9. New Protection Urged
Federal funds for co-operative fire protection in Indiana amount to $10,777 for the fiscal year 1942. The forest service is urging redoubled effort on the. part of all citizens this year to stamp out forest fires. “Whether caused by sabotage, enemy bombs, or by carelessness of our own citizens, forest fires aid ' the enemy,” forest service officials said, “by wasting valuable resources, interfering with war operations, and ‘diverting manpower from essential war work.”
