NEW gar April 25 (U. P).— Development of labor-saving devices

and improved seed are expected to|M$

d sugar-beet farmers in their drive to produce more beet-sugar than ever before in history, according to an article in the magazine the Country Gentleman. The improved seed has resulted from the development of a machine ‘at the University of California, which breaks the beet seed into gegments, each containing the germ of but one plant. Planters are easily adaoted for sowing the singled seed, and the small number of multiple plants can be choBped cut by hoe or cultivator. The new seed itself is more expensive, but only one-third as much, ‘weight, need be planted and|p production costs will be lower. One farmer is said to ve cut his thinning costs in half ast year by use of the singled seed. Development of a machine for ting beets out of the group and ping them will help take up the slack in any labor shortage which may result from the war, the ar- ~ ticle said.

STOCKS REACH 7-YEAR LOWS

A. T. & T. Is Weakest Among Market Leaders; Trade Is Light.

NEW YORK, April 25 (U, P.).— Leading stocks sagged to new seven-year lows today, while a few special | issues broke 1 to 5 points on a few transactions. The general list was quiet. Weakest among leaders, was American Telephone, which sold off a point at a new seven-year low at 109%. |Other communications were strong, however, on President Roosevelt's recent indication he favored a merger of the telegraph companies. Postal Telegraph preferred equaled its high for the year at 13, up 1%, and Western Union gained 2 to 25. Steel issues were little changed. Motors | eased. Some rails were slightly higher. Chemicals steadied around their recent lows. Eastman gained a point. Aircrafts met support after Douglas had equaled its low for the year. Oils were firmer with standard Oil (N. J.) active. Utilities were ufichanged in the average but several preferreds had sharp losses.
