FIRM CAN ERECT 10 UNITS A DAY
4 Types of Pre-Fabricated Dwellings Cost Less Than $500 Each.
Pre-fabricated houses now under construction by Barlow & Williams, Inc., 1016 E. 11th st, may be a
possible solution to the serious shortage of living quarters the In-
‘|dianapolis area is now facing.
The corporation,. realizing the need of small dwelling units for the city and county which has been brought about by the great influx of defense workers, has facilities to construct 10 of these small priced units a day and will be able to increase its output as the occasion demands. R. Earl Peters, state FHA director, said this week that he foresaw a potential demand for about 34,000 living units in the Indiana area during the coming year. These include all types. He said: “Single rooms for transient single individuals, individual homes near war materials plants and multi-family units on a rental basis also within reasonable communting distance of the industrial plants.
Cost Under $500
Barlow & Williams, Inc. have four different sizes of living units for sale under $500, the maximum cost of home building set by the war production board for nondefense workers. Those designated as defense workers may build homes or make improvements up to a $6000 maximum. A budget plan set up by the Indianapolis corporation enables a buyer of one of these low-priced units to finance’ the dwelling up to $300, with additional payments like rent. The price of the units includes erection, delivery and finance charges. The Barlow & Williams units have a cement block foundation and fireproof composition roofing. The interior is the size of an extra large room, which can be converted into two separate rooms. There are four windows to provide light and ventilation and window boxes decorate the front. There also is a front and back door.
80-Acre Site Available
Through an arrangement with an Indianapolis realtor, the company has made available at the present time 80 acres of ground four miles west of the city on Rockville road. By this, a prospective owner of one of these units may buy an acre of ground, have his living quarters

made to the units at the end of each year through a WPB ruling, providing, of course, the improvement is within the $500 limit. The state FHA office has estimated that there will be about 115,000 manufacturing wage earners added to the local payrolls in the next 12 to 18 months. This, with the increased marriage rate and the influx of out-of-town workers points to a possible doubling-up policy unless suitable living units can be provided, officials said.
STATE FHA SHOWS 189, QUARTER GAIN
An increase of about 18 per cent was shown by the FHA in Indiana in the volume of applications for home mortgage insurance during the first three months of this year over ‘the same period last year. R. Earl Peters, state FHA director, said the defense activity under FHA’s Title VI accounted for the increase. All of this type of work is new construction, he said. One of the highlights of the report was the increase in the volume of defense homes construction ‘as reflected in applications under both regular Title IT anc Title VI.
