Defense Epic Story But Full Details Must Wait End of War.

April 23.—The furl. | ous character of the battles which are taking place in small sectors of the front around Leningrad underline again the difficulties confronting | the Russians in their efforts to! break the vice-like pressure of the Finnish-German armies on Russia's’ gecond largest city. Russian attempts to enlarge the Leningrad pocket and so provide new lines of supply into the besieged port have for months been up against what is certainly | the most closely knit and highly fortified system of defenses along the entire Rus-so-German front. In that A. T. Steele area is to be found trench warfare nearest to the pattern of the last world war. One of the great stories of this war is the defense of Leningrad. Historians will have to wait until after the war, however, to hear it fn all its dramatic details. It is the story of mass endurance—a | courageous battle through the long, months of Russian winter against! cold, blockade and steady bombard-| ment from siege guns and from the gir. Somehow, throughout this trying | period, Leningrad's defenders have managed to keep a narrow Corrinon) open to the east. The army had to be provided for and its needs came first. Part of the population was | evacuated but those who remained | made sacrifices. They got along on| meager rations of food, used oil] lamps and torches instead of elec-| tric lights and, in the absence of| transport, walked to their places of employment. Spring and milder weather bring more welcome from Leningrad than anywhere in Russia. |

Food Smuggled In

Though the army has been adequately provided for, the task of getting sufficient food into Lenin- | grad to feed the population has] taxed the ingenuity of the authori-| ties. Besides the quantities brought in over the narrow avenue from the east, guerrilla legions have smuggled | gome hundreds of cartloads into] the blockaded metropolis through | the German lines. The German objective of starving feningrad into submission has so far | been frustrated. Nevertheless, the relief of Leningrad has been for! months and remains today one of¥ the cardinal aims of Soviet military | policy. That| is typical of the nature of the war-| fare in that region. | On some parts of the Leningrad front activity throughecut the winter has been confined to artillery exchanges and sniping.
