JAP INVASION BASE ABLAZE
Rabaul Is Target of U. | And Aussie Bombers; Bag 4 Enemy Planes.
GEN. MacARTHUR'S HEAD-| QUARTERS, AUSTRALIA, April 22 (U. P).—United States and Austra-| lian planes have started big fires) in their second heavy raid in three] days on the great Japanese inva-| sion base at Rabaul and have shot | down four Japanese planes which | raided Port Moresby, New Guinea, | Gen. Douglas MacArthur announced | today. In their attack on Rabaul, on New Britain island, the most dangercus Japanese base in the whole Australian zone, huge United States bombing planes centered their at-| tack on wharves and buildings and
their crews saw fires raging as they { keenest interest in the bill to per-| 1601 E. New Yerk
turned homeward. This raid was| made yesterday. Rabaul had received smashing blows in an at-! tack Sunday.
Japs Lose 4 Planes
In the Port Moresby fight ves-| terday, eight Japanese bombing planes attempted a raid with a fighter escort. Four of the escort planes, all crack Japanese Navy-O fighters, were shot down by allied fighters. It was indicated Gen. MacArthur was quickening the pace of his aerial offensive against the Japanese after a lull last week.| It was noted that in his commu-| nique today Gen. MacArthur for the first time referred to “our air force.”
This meant that the United States and Australian air corps in this Zone had been merged fighting unit. It was made known also that ays. | tralia, co-operating with Gen. Mac- | Arthur in defense work, is greatly expanding its volunteer air observer corps all over the continent. New | observation posts are being set up! and movements of all aircraft over! any part of the country will be! flashed to headquarters.
