LOCAL BUSINESS GAINS SLOWED

March Called ‘Plateau,’ But Uptrend May Be Resumed.

Two business indices this week indicated that Indianapolis business reached a plateau in March, but a third forecast that April might be the beginning of a new rise.

The Indiana Business Review, an published today by the Indiana uni-|

versity bureau of business research, | indicated there was little change in|

industrial employment in Indian- Am Mo

apolis between Feb. 15 and March 15.

cent and payrolls 2 per cent in that month while a 40 per cent payroll | gain was being shown in the whole; state.

This review and a report yester-|

day by the census bureau agreed on

g figure of 10 per cent as the in-:

crease in retail trade from March, 1941, to March, 1942. This w

per cent in other cities of the state where the war industries have, reached high production more recently than here.

Indication of the new upward

trend, probably the result of more]

conversion to war work here andi

expansion in some of the newer war a! was seen in the fact that

plants, the Indianapolis office of the U. S. émployment service set an all-time record of 924 placements in the week ending April 11.

Most spectacular gain in Indian-|

apolis business during March, as!

shown in the I. U. report, was

the issuance of building permits|gBen nd 1

for 314 new houses valued at $872,950. This was the greatest number of residential permits issued in one month since 1928. Wartime

building restrictions, however, have 5

made it likely that April and the subsequent months will be far below the March figure.
