Rough-House Romance

THE ROUGHEST HORSE OPERA in my recollection is “The Spoilers.” It's so tough that the bank-robbing scene is merely an incident. In the average action epic, maybe only two or three actors get slugged. Everybody gets walioped in “The Spoilers” and after the furniture is all busted and the characters black, blue and bleeding, you stumble out of the Circle with your guard up and your chin down. It is always well to remember that in the days of Milton Sills when “The Spoilers” first appeared, there was no sound-track. The acting of the silent films was largely pantomime, with every other move a gross exaggeration. In those good, old days, a fight always started with the hero and the villain swinging from their shoe-laces in 90-degree arcs. This lent the impression that the actors were good and mad at one another.

act. The “oomph” girl of a year ago has been shorn of that baloney and emerges in the film version of Henry Bellamann'’s sensitive novel as an artist. A novel like “Kings Row” which explores the subtle, psychopathic passages of small-town life, isn’t the easiest kind of a story for the films to handle. But Director Sam Woods takes the book boldly and presents as much of it as can be put upon the screen. There is an honesty in this picture which helps it achieve excellence. It keeps faith with the mood and spirit of the novel. As Randy Monaghan, the girl from the other side of the tracks, Miss

The jab, developed by Jimmy Cagney and refined by Edward G. Even for the silents, though, it was a masterpiece of overstatement. It is supposed to be the fight that

‘Eternal Gift' Source Spiritual Uplift.

The first sound motion picture | of the Catholic solemn mass, “The! Eternal Gift,” was given a preview | at the Granada yesterday befére| 1500 school children. To this reviewer, “The Eternal Gift” is outstanding both from the standpoint of its simplicity and its mystery. It gives a person. whether he be Catholic, Jew or Protestant, a ringside seat at that great sacri-| fice made on the cross of Calvary | over 1900 vears ago. It is something different, something new and refreshing to see a motion picture far removed from the Hollywood stereotypes.

Cost a Fortune

“The Eternal Gift” is no ordinary| film, It cost a small fortune and two years of hard work to make. § It catches sound no movie has ever caught before. It contains scenes and actions that many Catholics | themselves doubtlessly have never viewed, in spite of the fact that | they have watched this sacrifice time and time again. This is a picture without one visible star. Each role is portrayed as if the cast were entirely oblivious of the modern motion picture cam-| era grinding away on an ancient] scene.
