HAVEN OFFERED ON ISLE OF MAN

Aliens and Doubtful British Citizens Sent There Have It Rather Easy.

By WILLIAM H. STONEMAN Copyright, 1942, by The Indianapolis Times and The Chicago Daily News, Inc.

LONDON, April 16—For warweary British citizens without too many scruples, there is still one easy way of getting away from it all. Apparently, all they need to do §s to get detained as untrustworthy characters, in the meaning of defense regulation 18-B, and get sent to the Isle of Man. According to reports reaching London, this wellinsulated little paradise is now preparing for another nice summer season and thousands of internees who have been sent there are in great spirits. Included in the group are approximately 600 British citizens,

South Bend Eats Well, Study Shows

WASHINGTON. April 16 (U. P) —Federal Security Adminis-

| closed the eating habits of South Bend, Ind, which was surveyed as a typical American city. Those habits are: Approximately nine out of 10 families have meat every day. Beef, veal, lamb, ham and pork are the most popular meats. The white potato is eaten more frequently than any other vegetable. Oranges and grapefruit are greater favorites than tcmatoes. About three out of four housewives had heard of enriched bread. Children fare better than adults in getting nutritious foods. Young housewives use more milk than older ones. Mr. McNutt said South Bend was selected because an intensive community nutrition program is under way there.

Two Pubs and a Movie

British citizens in the Isle of Man geem to have better conditions than the others, though none of them endure what one would regard as a very tough life. They have two pubs which are open from 10:30 & m. until 10:30 p. m, and a movie. | They are also allowed to go swim- | ming when the weather is good, and within a few weeks now the sands will be decorated by the forms of athletic exiles. British citizens who are detained on the Isle of Man are treated with much consideration because, theoretically, they are not under arrest but simply on remand. They have not been formally convicted of any crimes; if they had been they would, presumably, be in prison.

Some Dissatisfied

On behalf of at least some of the prisoners, it must be said that, swimming or no swimming, they would much rather be at liberty and, in at least one case with which your ccrrespondent is acquainted, the prisoner would prefer to do any war work that could be offered him rather than to live in the comparative security of the island. The attitude of the government geems to be that these people do net deserve trial, the assumption being that all of those detained are of such dubious dependability that their original detention was merited. It is still not quite clear why the government does not place formal charges against these people, if they are so untrustworthy that they deserve indefinite detention. If they were tried and found guilty they! could be sentenced to penal servi- |
