Granada Matinee to Precede 3-Day Run Next Week.

A special advance matinee of the first sound film of the Catholic solemn mass, “The Eternal Gift,” will be shown at the Granada theater Friday beginning at 3 p. m. Although the matinee is especially designed for children of school age, adults will be ddmitted. The main engagement of the picture is set for next Monday through Wednesday, with another matinee next Tuesday. “The Eternal Gift” has been heartily indorsed by the Most Rev. Joseph E. Ritter, bishop of Indianapolis. In a letter to pastors of the diocese, he said:

entitled ‘The Eternal Gift’ serves well of the movie public, and I hope it receives their generous patronage. “Since the picture has special significance of a deeply religious character, I ask the reverend pas-

tors of the city to encourage their people to see it.” Produced by the Servite Fathers, | the picture will be presented here] under the sponsorship of the Na-! tional Council of Catholic Women, the Catholic Youth Organization

and the Daughters of Isabella, Chicago Symphony Plays

The 10-reel movie of the Easter mass, which took two years to complete, has been acclaimed by the hierarchy of the church, noted civic leaders and technical experts as a magnificent spectacle. In it there are 35 leading members of the Chi-| cago Symphony orchestra, 125 Cathedral choristers, 50 Gregorian chanters and 1500 extras. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen of Catholic university, Washington, D. C. has the important role of narrator in the film.

Give Ayres Sympathy

He Is Sincere.

By RICHARD LEWIS AFTER THE first shock of the news that Lew Ayres had gone to a conscientious objectors’ camp, Hollywood is gradually taking a sympathetic view of the case, our Hollywood correspondent, Paul Harrison, reports.

however incomprehensible Mr. Ayres’ views may be, they are at least sincere. The Hollywood consensus seems to be that had the actor been fearful of mussing his hair in battle, he could have wangled himself a safe desk joh, But he didn’t. He trained and studied for service as a stretcherbearer, a hospital flunkey—anything he could do toward saving life. But a man who will not swear to defend the U, S. against enemies is not acceptabie to the army even as a stretcher-bearer, Mr. Harrison reports. The studio has been arguing against the withdrawal of the last two Dr. Kildare films, but many exhibitors over the country are canceling them just the same,

THERE ARE many things that can be said about “Sullivan's Travels.” In the first place, Veronica Lake, who has been glamorized to no end with her now famous hair-do, sheds this glamour and the hair-do. For the first time in her movie career, she can see out of both eyes. It looks as though Lew Ayres has thrown away his career. He could have saved it. But he didn't. ”

Deflates the Stars “WILD BILL” WELLMAN, they call him. He's the terror of .the sound stages. The sardonic director has made more than one star fly into a rage and then turn in a startling perform=ance. He believes the stars do better work when they're deflated and put on their mettle. “Darling,” he oS asked an oomph. Mr. Wellman queen, “why do you keep imposing on the good nature of real actors and actresses and on the time of the directors?” He gets results, too. # & 4

Title Trouble A VETERAN PRESS agent in Hollywood got fed up with the practice of switching titles on pictures. For movies about war, cattle rustling, love, jungle or anything, he would invariably submit his title, "Joe, the Wounded Tennis Player.” Reprimanded by the studio for his cynical attitude, he would argue ‘that “Joe, the Wounded Tennis | Player” was just as appropriate a title as most of the ones eventually chosen. He'd cite such cases as “The Pink Chemise” which finally reached the screen as “Come On, Marines” or “Sweet Mystery of Life” which became “The Gold Diggers of 1934.” The press agent died about a year ago, but he has been vindicated. Morton Thompson, an exnewspaperman, is writing a book about Hollywood and the title is “Joe, the Wounded Tennis Player.” Two or three top-notch Hollywood agencies are interested in it, 2 ” "

Ann Sothern Asks Decree From Pryor| HOLLYWOOD, April 15 (U. P.) — Ann Sothern, wise-cracking, blond film star, asked a divorce from Roger Pryor, actor and band leader, today in a suit charging cruelty. Mr. Pryor, she said, caused her “mental suffering” which made continued married life unendurable. She asked neither alimony nor a property settlement. Miss Sothern, known to screen fans as the fast-talking, wise-crack-ing showgirl and woman reporter, and Mr. Pryor separated last September. She described the parting as a “trial.” There was no reconciliation, she said, so she decided to seek a divorce. His orchestra engagements throughout the country kept the couple separated a great deal, Miss Sothern said. He is the son of the late Arthur
