M'ARTHUR IS PANAMA IDOL
Movie Audiences Whistle And Cheer When His
Picture Is Shown. By NAT. A. BARROWS
Copvright, 1942, by The Indianapolis Times and The Chicago Daily News. Inc. PANAMA CITY, R. P, April 13 (Via Clipper)—(CDN).—For a few] moments, as I groped along the| aisle hunting a seat, I though a riot had brokenp Sg out in one of Panama's largest movie houses. Excitedly, the sudience was stamping, whistling and cheering loud enough to drown the ear- : piercing blast of f the sound track. '; That in any} Nat, A. Barrows Latin American : movi e theater] means plenty of noise. A woman | pounded my back when I passed. A boy waived his arm rapidly aloft § the manner of a Panamanian § showing deep emotion. The din § } 3
grew more intense. A glance at the screen told the story. It was, of course, Gen. } Douglas MacArthur, ; He is now the great popular hero ; with the masses down here. His | name is magic. He is adored and idolized by “gold” and “silver” | workers alike, by the ancient ci-| gar-smoking crones selling lottery) tickets and by the urchins with| their shoeshine boxes, by rich and| by poor. His picture hangs in many store windows along the central avenue. Gen. MacArthur, in fact, has caught the fancy of Latin Americans as few men ever have done.
