In “Hawk of the Hills,” Walter Lacketeen was always being chased by Indians. He was a great Indian fighter, only he always seemed to be retreating. One Saturday, he retreated into a bear trap and the last thing you saw as the episode ended was his agonized frenzy. You couldn’t wait until the next Saturday and when it finally came, there he was again, being chased by the Indians while the girl at the plano played the chase music from “William Tell” which she knew by heart so she could watch the picture, too. Again the bear trap snagged his foot, again he beat his chest and then, flexing his mighty muscles, he calmly stooped over, opened the trap and ran like mad until he fell over a cliff.

o'clock on WIRE. " Mr. Rathbone is well-known for his Sherlock Holmes roles both on the screen and : radio. He was a lieutenant in the Te Liverpool Scottish Mr. Rathbone during the first world war and soon after made his screen success. Tonight's story is “A Continental Uniform,” an original radio drama by Robert Tallman. It will trace the history of Arnold through his military career until he cried out on his deathbed to his wife, Peggy, “Bring me my continental uniform. God forgive me for ever putting on another!”

THOSE WERE THE great days of serials. But you don't see this sort of thing anymore, I discover. The stuff nowadays has super heroes like Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and Superman. They don't mess around with puny problems the heroes of my serial days struggled with. After beating up Hitler and Mussolini, Flash Gordon flies up to Mars and pacifies that planet. It seems to me, though, that the studio gets itself out on a limb in “Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe.” In my opinion, he's a dead duck from then on. What else is there left for him to cone tend with? One of the current serials around town is “Spy Smasher.” He gets captured in episode one, machine-gunned in episode two, drowned in episode three, suffocated in four, burned alive in five, decapitated in six, blown up in seven, blown up again for good measure in eight, crushed by a fall in nine and charred to a cinder in a fiery furnace in 10. Then episode 11 comes along and our hero is really killed by an ordinary pistol shot and tume bles off a high building. You know he's dead this time. But wait. Episode 12 is yet to come. Sure enough, it develops that it. was not “Spy Smasher” who got bumped, but his twin brother, Joe.

The Edgar Rice Burroughs ine fluence undoubtedly has had much to do with Superman, who is kind of an improved model of Tarzan. As for me, I still prefer the old - epics about Dan'l Boone and Wild Bill Hickok. I think they were much more constructive heroes, even if they, too, died a thousand feaths every Saturday afternoon. The Hawk of the Hills showed us how to find north in the woods by looking at the mossy side of a jree and what deer tracks looked ike. But I guess the kids of today wouldn't tolerate this old fogey stuff. Yay, . Y
