Lieut. Gen. Knudsen Pleased With Women in War Factories
By ROGER BUDROW
LIEUT. GEN. WILLIAM S. KNUDSEN put his finger on one of our major difficulties in producing war goods when |
he was visiting war factories here yesterday. Even though some of our war factories have all the work
they can do, the finished product is sometimes held up because of material shortages somewhere along the production
line. That is not new but it’s becoming very important.
Our war production is something like the great Mississippi river sys] tem. All the tributaries must flow]

STOCKS SLUMP TO NEW LOWS
Utilities Decline Enough to Push Average to All-
Time Record.
NEW YORK, April 11 (U. P).— Stocks made an irregular decline today and steadied slightly above the four-year lows made a month ago in the industrial average. Utilities eased sufficiently to send the average to all-time record low. Hupp featured in volume and made a new high for the year. Other low-priced motors were steady. Among leaders, Chrysler

at an even pace to keep the lower § Mississippi (final assembly line) go-| ing as usual. If some tributary (in industry it would be called a sub-contractor) such as the Ohio or Wabash or White river or even Fall creek, is dammed up or is low because of a drought, then, sometime later, that will be noticed on the lower Mississippi. It is almost a super-human job to regulate the manufacture and shipments of thousands of parts of guns, tanks, planes and so on so that the right number of the right parts will arrive at the right place at the right time. But, to as great extent as possible, it must be done. This week! in one important war factory here, I saw war goods almost finished but waiting for just a few parts. When they came in; men from several other departments came over to rush them through fast. It's the same in many places. Gen. Knudsen was pleased with the way women work out in war manufacturing. He believes that in many small, routine operations (like on bomb fuses) they are better than men. When he was asked if Allison production was being slowed because of the emphasis on bombers (which don’t use Allison motors) he replied: “We can use all the Allisons they can turn out.” Gen. Knudsen wasn’t originally an army man, but was given the rank (three stars) by President Rooseveit when the OPM was disbanded and Mr. Knudsen was placed in charge of army war production. With such a high rank, he has authority over most of the army officers he associates with. He talks in a language factory superintendents and workers understand. He must enjoy this job— going around trying to step up production—much more than trying to cut government red tape in Washington, as he had to do when he was head of the now-defunct OPM.
