‘Gondoliers’ Shows Fine
Partnership,
Jordan and Civic Join In Operetta Full of Blended Singing.
THE JORDAN CIVIC Operetta Guild and the Civic Theater partnership in “The Gondoliers” began last night, and we see no reason why it shouldnt keep going indefinitely. The presentation of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, with its mincing, comedy-satire, was delightful. “The Gondoliers” is to continue nightly through next Saturday night. The immediate purpose of the partnership, as well expressed by the program, is to further the music theater for American singers and audiences. Bravo. I don't know how one would compare this performance with professional light opera presentations. For my part, no comparison is called for. This is the work of a group of citizens and voice students, It stands up well on its own feet. The
performance is highly entertaining.

I can think of no better critical standard. i There are some mighty good voices | present. Carol Geisler, Lillie She aw and John Phillips, a Tech senior are excellent. Charles Hedley, director of the grou ® he sings the part of Marco, is splendid. In nearly all Gilbert and Sulli- | van operas, there is always aj pompous character, somewhat] grandiose about things and usually! a bass-bariton It's a part which] requires the grand manner plus a bit of tongue-in-cheek behavior. | Carroll Reynolds does the job smoothly as the Duke of Plaza Toro. Lloyd Patten as Luiz, his at-| tendant, and Mary Guidone as! Casilda, his daughter. do a romantic bit neatly. Their voices blend well In this gather ring, there Is a large variety of voice types and timbres, which sometimes presents difficulties, especialy in choral work. But this chorus is fine and strong Mr. Hedley, voice department director at Jordan, and Richard Hoover of the Civic Theater collaborated in the production. R.
