By FRANK WIDNER One of the biggest temptations to the camera fan these days are those big, fat clouds against the |clear blue sky. Any beginner knows that in or-

Usually, the beginner will conisult a more advanced amateur or the fellow next door who has been | wading through books on the theory lof the filter. What results is that the beginner usually gets so crammed with information that he |gets badly scared und is ready to

film, you will get trouble with filters. Only the pale yellow ones are comfortable, with ortho. The hers require you to increase exposure four or five times and the result is that your camera aperture is opened so. wide that you have little, if any, depth of field left.
Filters Change With Speed
With pan film it is different. You can use pale-yellow, deeper-yellow, vellow-green, green and red-orange filters. The rules tell you how much to increase exposure; they tell you to use green filters with fast pan and yellow filters with slower pans.
rule makers will even show you figures to prove their point, try this even if it’s just as an experiment. Take any old filter (providing it's not red—and I don’t mean redorange—I mean red) use it on any old pan, read your meter for the shadows, double your exposure for the filter and you'll come out fine. The more your back is toward the sun, the darker the sky will be. The more you swing the lens toward the sun, the lighter the sky will be. If you use any kind of a filter but pale yellow with ortho, you'll get an under exposure even if the exposure has been increased a million times, if the light is at all reddish.
