Arky Gets 5 for 5 Against Yankees as Dodgers Win

By UNITED PRESS WILMINGTON—Club President Larry MacPhail will give the

Brooklyn Dodgers a final once-over

before the starting gun next Tues-

day: when they play the sixth game of their spring series with the New York Yankees here today. The Dodgers are leading the Yanks

three to two.

Two homers by Joe DiMaggio and a perfect day at bat for Arky

Vaughan of the Dodgers featured ! vesterday’s game in which the “Bums” out-slugged the world champions, 13 to 8. Vaughan had a hother, a double and three singles. Joe Gordon and Ken Sears also hit round-trippers for the Yanks and Rookie Jack Graham poled out another for Brookyn.

FT. DODGE.—The Chicago Sox and the Chicago Cubs play the final game of their “traveling city series” today—weather permitting. They were forced into idleness for the second straight day yesterday by inclement conditions at Tulsa, Okla. The Sox will send Joe Haynes and Buck Ross to the mound, saving Johnny Rigney and Johnny Humphries for the homecoming intra-city battle at Chicago Friday. FT. DODGE. — A thinned-out

Tigers, 7 to 2. Max Lanier and Lon Warneke jointly held the Tigers to four hits.

MONTGOMERY The St. Louis Browns, with 168 victories in 21 starts, wind up their spring training business in the southeast today in a game with Montgomery. The American leaguers beat Anniston of the Southeastern circuit, 13 to 2, yesterday.

ENID—Whiler the Pittsburgh Pirates idled two consecutive days because of the weather, Manager Frankie Frisch has been considering a change in his opening

| lineup. Frisch now indicates it | will be Maurice Van Robays at

left field instead of Rookie Johnny Wyrostek, whose batting hasn't been up to par. Hoping to resume with the Athletics today, the Pirates will wind up their exhibition run with a week-end se-

Reaching an agreement with Butler university officials on salary terms, H. W. (Wally) Middlesworth, city recreation director, will take over his new duties as Butler athletic director “withifi a few days.” Paul D. (Tony) Hinkle, athletic director who is to go on leave of absence to coach basketball at Great Lakes, was expected toc receive his come mission this week. When Mr. Middlesworth goes to Butler he will turn over his city recreation position to Frank Luzar, assistant coach at Washington high school.

Township Fetes Central Bears

Lawrence township paid tribute to its basketball heroes in a big way at the Riviera club last night. More than 400 fans from Lawrence township attended a dinner-

dance, honoring Central high school’s Bears who won both the

sectional and regional tournaments the first year of the school's existence. There were speeches lauding the record of the team, awards for athletic achievements and music

Frisch Has Rebuilt Pirates Into Strongest Club in Years

ENID, Okla, April 9 (U. P)~— Showing more fire and dash than in many years, the Pittsburgh Pirates are heading north for the opening of the National league season with the best conditioned and strongest looking club in several years. Demonstrating a powerful punch combined with good pitching, the Pirates have kicked the Athletics, White Sox and Cubs around in exhibition games to run up 15 vietories against five defeats. Not in a long time has a Pittsburgh team been in as fine condition as the 1942 club. In recent years one of the big drawbacks of the Pirates has been their failure to get away from the barrier fast. In rebuilding the Pirates, Manager Frankie Frisch had several delicate problems to solve. I.oss of rookie Bill Cox, who was expected to play shortstop, and complications resulting from Lee Handley's ailing arm didn't help his problem any. The Pirates finished last in fielding a year ago and one of Frisch's big jobs was to improve the defense.

double play a game. In addition Coscarart’s batting has been a big surprise. He's batting 326 and has clouted three homers, one with the bases filled. Manager Jimmy Dykes of the White Sox, himself an old third baseman, who's seen Elliott at third base in seven games, has placed the stamp of approval on him. Elliott, five pounds heavier than last year, has shown an improvement in his batting over a year ago. Afield he has a strong arm and handles ground balls naturally.

Fletcher at First

Elbie Fletcher will be at first again and Stu Martin and Alf Anderson will handle the infield utility jobs. Handley has gone home with

his sore arm and may be out all year.

with Maurice van Robays in left, Vince DiMaggio in center, and Jimmy Wasdell in right. John Wyrostek. a left-handed hitter who batted .316 for New Orleans last year, gave van Robays a good run for the left field job but didn't
