Proper Care Will Give Rugs A Longer Lease on Life

A LOOMING WOOLEN SHORTAGE means you must give your rugs unusual care. Wear and general damage to rugs is caused principally by grit,

moths, carpet beetles, an insect called the silver fish, dampness—which produces mildew and dry-rot—improper washings and, frequently,

Shyle Musirated $7.50

Rugs should be cleaned frequently at home with vacuum cleaners, ” hand sweepers, brooms. Remember too, to turn rugs face down occasionally, to remove dirt on the under side. Wash rugs carefully at least once every two years. Those that bear the most traffic should be washed once a year.

While home cleaning removes surface dirt, a thorough professional washing removes the grit that cuts the piling and also removes insect eggs ar grubs. Turn your rugs around periodical ly so that wear will be more evenly distributed. .

‘Dumbo’ Film Booked at Circle

A Timely Film: It's ‘Don't Talk’

One or two careless words dropped over a cup of coffee is enough. Maybe those words were just what the people with the big ears were waiting for. A dramatized demonstration of what loose talk can do is provided in the short feature, “Don’t Talk,” showing now at Loew's, A trucker brags about getting a contract for hauling defense mate-

dow and changes the menu card, That night the trucker is killed, A few loose words did it. Some weeks ago I hung around the defense .plant restaurants and taverns in Indianapolis and so I know that “Don’t Talk” is more

THE NEW DOUBLE BILL at Loew's has a twist. which is both novel and unintentional. “We Were Dancing” is the A film. It has everything—two triple A stars, Norma Shearer and Melvyn Douglas, and the background of Noel Coward's “Tonight at 8:30.” Yet, it fails to click. “Yank on the Burma Road” is the B picture. It has only one and one-half stars—Laraine Day for one, and Barry Nelson for onehalf, It was made to be flat, but it manages to rise above itself in the drama it suggests. vyn Douglas is excellent as usual. Norma Shearer is flawless. The situations are stuffy and somewhat out of date and so, it seems to me, is the humor which leaks out of them. You will find Mr. Douglas taking the part of a suave European count who makes a living a8 a professional house guest. You will find Miss Shearer as a beauteous Polish princess who is making a living by marrying into money. You will find them in love at first sight. He promises to go to work. He doesn’t and slips back into his house-guest role. She gets a divorce. She is sorry. So: is he. He gets a job as an interior decorator to win her back. But no, she has decided to be sane and marry moneybags. Then, the band plays their waltz. Love triumphs over all in a sophisticated kind of way. The settings, gowns and women are beautiful. Mr. Douglas, Reginald Owen and Alan Mowbray all wear tuxedos with ease. Ho .. . hum. Let's pass on to the Burma Road.

# 2 2

it Could Mave Been

“YANK ON THE BURMA ROAD” was put together without any pretense of becoming an epic. Yet it could have been epic. The drama of trucks moving across Burma and the tértuous defiles of western China is unmistakable, no matter how it’s done. The film has Laraine Day, who has done well ,but only manages to look pretty in this one. Barry Nelson is fair. But the whole business is done as though the makers didn’t want to spénd too much time or money on a B_picture. As a hack driver in Brooklyn, Mr. Nelson captures two dangerous criminals in a casual sort of way and becomes famous. He is offered a job by the Chinese as the leader of a Burma Road caravan, He snubs the offer until he sees a procession of Chinese school children contributing to Chinese relief. Miss Day plays the wife of a soldier of fortune, fiying for the Japs. She is stranded in Rangoon en route to meet her husband and hitch-hikes with Barry Nelson's caravan across the Burma Road. There are one or twd good sequences of Chinese rushing out to repair the road after a bombing attack and Mr. Nelson makes one or two good speeches. There is: also some remarkable truck driving, some poor battle and bombing sequences and a lot of California scenery. :
