Amateur Night EVER SINCE I TOOK THE

PART of a Christmas candle who

rebelled against Santa Claus in a play put on by the Little Pupils of the Third Grade, I have had a soft spot for amateur theatricals.

That was some time ago in

another world, but I recall quite

clearly that my part called for climbing up on a chair and shouting: “Down with Santa Claus!” I was a pretty good shouter in those days,

too. and I put everything I had into the effort. With the result that I tumbled over backward, fracturing a board in the school stage. So it was with this fond memory that I witnessed a heartening spectacle at the Fountain Square theater last night entitled “The Junior Citizens Revue.” It is to continue through Thursday night. At the moment, I am not so concerned with the social service side of this community effort, which is to give youngsters something constructive to do, as with the possibilities it presents for the development of real talent. rere is no doubt that “The Junior Citizens Revue” succeeds on both counts. t is the product of the citizens committee of the South Side and Keystone community centers. There will be more of it. juni jor citizens are a group of bors and

do stunts. Some of them perform amazingly well. ® & 5

Pat Kelly ‘got himself tied up in knots he couldnt untie which was part of the show. He kept appearing here and there and the stunt worked to the amusement of the audience. There was a piano solo by Phyllis Pruitt and five-year-old Beverly Kursey did a toe dance. The Hawaiian dance of little Joy Kursey was a wonder. The others in the revue were: LaVerne Stewart and Mary Jones, Shirley Stonebreaker, Bob Moates, Dorothy Howard, Dolores Hurst, Derothy Clark, Marilyn Major, Helen Maloney, Patty An Miles, Silvers the Magician, Delia Fields, Jack Burris, Joana Gordon, Gene

board and to copy it all down, I had to stand in the path of the gentleman who shuttled back and forth between the curtain ropes and the lights. We had several collisions as he dashed to and fro, but after a while I learned to hear him coming and to step nimbly aside when he grabbed for a light switch. The finale was a patriotic tableau with three boys made up as three great Americans: Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt. They wore signs as further evidence, Only the sign painter got mixed up and spelled it “Rooseved” and nobody noticed it until the act was on stage. Anyway, amateur theatricals

got off to a good start. It's a barrel of fun for everybody. I think it will succeed.

Zaring to Show First-Run Shaw Film; Cantors Celebrate Double Birthday

TWO BIRTHDAYS ARE being celebrated this week by the Cantor circuit. It was just five years ago that Don Wright, manager of the Rivoli, hit on an idea to add an extra attraction to the last show every Saturday night. Patrons who attended the last show on that night not only would see a complete bill but would be entertained by a revival hit as well. Another birthday is that of the Emerson's introduction into the Cantor regime. This east side theater was acquired from Chick Calloway, booker for the Indianapolis co-operative, of which the Cantor theaters are a member. Present officers of the Cantor group are: Joseph Cantor, president; Leo Cantor, vice president, and Morris Cantor, secretarytreasurer. $$ & 3 BRUCE CABOT trades bullet for bullet in the story of a twofisted marshal bringing law and order to the frontier towns which opens this week in the neighborhoods. The picture is a better than average western, “Wild Bill Hickok Rides” It also stars Warren William and Constance Bennett. It wiil be at the Vogue through Saturday, the Zaring tomorrow through Saturday and at the Irving and Rivoli tomorrow through Sunday. The Speedway will show the film Friday and Saturday and the Belmont has scheduled it for Sunday through Tuesday. ~ » = » ABBCTT AND Costello go berserk as usual in “Ride ’Em Cowboy,” another new film showing this week. Costello does a lot of running from the redskins in the show, Dick Foran and Anne Gwynne provide the love interest while the Merry Macs and Ella Fitzgerald take care of the musical end of the picture. It will be at the Strand through Saturday, the Granada for a full week beginning tomorrow and at the Irving and Rivoli tomorrow through Sunday. The Belmont, St. Clair, Speedway and Uptown will show the picture Sunday through Tuesday. = = =
