Bisons Pounce On Indians

For 12-5 Score

Times Special COCOA, Fla, April 7—The Indianapolis Indians are in the waning part of their spring training trip. But one exhibition gdme remains on the docket and that will be played here tomorrow against the Buffalo Bisons of the International league with whom the Tribesters have a game edge of three to two to date in grapefruit loop sessions. Lefty Bob Logan probably will be sent to the firing line to go as far as he likes against the Bisons. He's still ahead of his mound mates on form and record this spring and has already worked a seven-inning stretch. J After tomorrow the Redskins will settle down to daily routine practice, but heavy on batting and in-

field drill. They will close the camp! Sunday and roll out for the north!

and Indianapolis early Monday morning. The boys are due in the hometown and at Victory field on Tuesday, April 14, two days in advance of the American association opener against Columbus.

Bisons Turn on Tribe

The Tribe's exhibition record now |

stands at seven games won and] three defeats. Pierce yesterday, the Buffalo Bisons | went on the warpath and pinned back the Indians’ ears, 12 to 5. George Gill, veteran right-hander, and Pat Ralsh, rookie, were the vietims of the Bisons’ uprising. The Bisons pilfered Gabby Hartnett’s “big inning” thunder and staged a seven-run rally in the second stanza against what Gill had to offer. The Indians caught up. In that chnto Buffalo slaughtered Gill for six hits, including a home run by Bill Boken, former Amer-| ican association infielder. Gill worked five innings and Rookie; Ralsh three. The youngster, a right-hander, was nervous and his control was “terrific”—in reverse. | He issued five walks and made two! wild pitches.

Three Rookies Dropped

Incidentally, Ralsh has been refeased to the Jacksonville club of the South Atlantic league. And he] will be accompanied there by rookie Pitcher Paul Taylor and rookie Catcher Earl Tunter. The young catcher looks the part of a future great but needs seasoning in the] little minors. The Tribe retains! strings on the three youngsters. Ed Dersch and Eddie Marcum, young hurlers who reside in Indianapolis, are marked for release after the Tribe squad returns north, according to training camp gossip.) Joe Bestudik was the Tribe's best! hitter yesterday with a single and double. Joe Moore, outfielder, was, given a rest and did not make the trip to Ft. Pierce. Milt Galatzer filled in for him and got one hit. Packey Rogers, subbing for Bill] Skelley in the shortfield, had a bad| day by committing three errors in| nine chances. The defeat snapped the Indians’ winning streak at five straight. = = = INDIANAPOLIS

_ Guy Reynolds, Paul Saunders and Howard Smothers (left to right) will compete in the Hoosier Athletic club’s water carnival and club championship Saturday night at 8 o'clock in the club pool. Ten events

have been scheduled.

Loss of Camilli and Herman Hurts Dodgers; Lose, 6-5

By UNITED PRESS NOFOLK-—Minus much of their batting punch because of the absence of Dolph Camilli and Billy Herman, the Brooklyn Dodgers continued their exhibition series against the New York Yankees today. A Brooklyn rally in the eighth inning fell short of the mark yesterday and the Yankees scored an 6-5 triumph. Johnny Allen held the Yanks scoreless for five innings but they opened up on Al Sherer for

four runs in the eighth to win.

OKLAHOMA CITY—Carl Hubbell and Bob Carpenter were scheduled to pitch for the New York Giants against the Cleveland Indians in the 10th game of their exhibition series today. Mel

Harder will start for the Indians. Jim Bagby went the route for Cleveland yesterday as the Indians made a six-run fourth inning good for a 6-5 triumph over the Giants. Manager Lou Boudreau belted a three-run homer and Rookie Catcher Jimmy Hegan a four-bagger good for two runs, to spark the Cleveland drive.

TUCUMCARI—The New Chicago Cubs batting order—revamped for power—gets another test today against the Chicago White Sox in the ninth game of their barnstorming series. With Dom Dallessandro shifted to the clean-up spot, Bill Nicholson batting third and Catcher Clyde Mc- | Cullough sixth, the Cubs collected six runs on eight hits while holding the Sox to three tallies in a five-inning contest yesterday.

DURHAM—Manager Billy Southworth has decided on the lineup that will start the season for the St. Louis Cardinals except for two positions, left field and first base, he said today. At left field, there are four contenders Harry Walker, Ervin Dusak, Stan Musial and Coaker Triplett. Two will be kept and the others will be farmed out, he said. Johnny Triplett | Hopp, a standout last season and the sensational Columbus rookie, Ray Sanders are battling for the first base spot and may alternate there, Southworth said. The Cards play Detroit here today.

DELAND-—The St. Louis Browns broke camp today and headed for Anderson, S. C., where they play the Atlanta Crackers, but they left behind six pitchers and an infielder to catch up on their work. Manager Luke Sewell said he believed the players would get in more work than if they went with the team. Bill Cox, Loy Hanning, John Niggeling, John Whiethead, Booils Hollingsworth and Stanley Ferens were

| the pitchers and Don Heffner, the

infielder,

JACKSONVILLE — Rockie Bob Repass of the Washington Senators doubled with the score tied and the bases full in the ninth inning yesterday to give his team a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phils. It was the 18th victory for the Senators against six losses in the spring training season, and their second straight over Philadelphia.

JACKSONVILLE —Manager Hans Lobert of the Philadelphia Phils said today that while he likes to win pre-season exhibition games, defeats are almost as important if they give him a chance to analyze the mistakes of his rookies under fire. After losing the third straight game to the Washington Senators yesterday, 6-3, Lobert said the rookies he used in the game, including Shortstop Bill Burich, had learned a valuable lesson. Burich’s fumble in the third inning gave the game away.
