New Brass Mill Here Is Ahead of Schedule = By ROGER BUDROW —— BECAUSE IT HAD THE
“KNOW-HOW” one large
corporation has transformed a cornfield southwest of Indianapolis into an arsenal making brass shell cases in only 10 months—ahead of schedule. Over in Bridgeport, Conn., the Bridgeport Brass Co. four years ago built a modern brass rolling mill. When this war came, Bridgeport Brass was designated by the government to increase its production. So it built almost a duplicate of that Bridgeport mill out here. Six weeks were shaved off the time needed by engineers to design the Indianapolis mill, because they knew how from past experience. Moreover, they put in some improvements they learned would be helpful, after operating the Bridgeport mill. The government (Defense Plant Corp.) owns the mill, which cost around $12,000,000 Roger Budrow ,n4q Bridgeport Brass Co. will be paid a fixed fee
for operating it. The first bar of brass was cast
These pictures give you some ides of the size of Henry Ford’s new bomber plant near Detroit. The factory is more than a half mile fong, a quarter mile wide. Shown are the interior and exterior of the assembly line section which extends three thousand feet beyond the administration and manufacturing section. Autes will run errands in this part.
FOUR DETOURS ADDED T0 STATE HIGHWAYS
Four detours were added to the state highway system during the past week, Highway Commissioner S. C. Hadden announced today. Closed to traffic are: Indiana 2 from U. S. 20 north and east; Indi-j3 ana 57 for about one mile near El- [4

Bridgeport Brass Co. came into being right after the Civil war and first’ made clocks and brass clips for women’s hoop skirts. Later it sold its clock interests and began making the famed “New Rochester” lamp. (That was before the days of gas and electricity.)

LIMITS HEATING PAD PRODUCTION
WPB Orders Quinine Sold Only for Treatment Of Malaria.
The WPB today limited production of electric heating pads and prohibited the use of chromium in their manufacture. Approximately 30 manufacturers this year may equal their 1940 production of hospital-type electric heating pads but will have to cut the number of pads from home use to half those made in 1640,
Conserve Quinine
To conserve quinine for military needs, the WPB has ordered that quinine sold to pharmaceutical and medicinal companies, botanical supply houses, wholesale drug and supply houses, retail drug stores and all other persons who deal in quinine must be used only as an antimalarial agent or an ingredient of quinine and urea hydrochloride. The restriction does not apply to any stock of quinine in combination with any other medicinal ingredient. Persons owning or having control of 50 pounds of cinchona bark (from which quinine is derived) or 50 ounces of quinine must report such stocks to WPB.
Canning Sugar
Canners and packers may obtain quota-exempt sugar for the original canning of fruits and vegetables. The WPB regulation does not ape ply to fruits and vegetables which are packed and later ®©pened so they may be combined with others. For example, sugar used for canning grapefruit would be exempt but if the fruit was later combined into a fruit salad mixture the sugar for the second process would have to come from the packer’s
regular quota. LOCAL ISSUES

The best that can be hoped is!
that after this war there will be enough of this business to keep the new mill here as busy as it will beU in the coming months.
2 s 2 ~ PURDUE FEARS that Indiana farmers won't have enough feed for their increased livestock programs. Those who don’t have enough grain in the bins or hay in the mow are urged to buy what they will need now, from neighbors if pessible. Purdue believes the situation will get worse instead of better because transportation facilities may be tied up by fall, with railroad freight cars ladened with war goods and the tire shortage hitting trucks.

ODDS AND ENDS: The bark of California's giant redwood trees is being used as a substitute for kapok, used by mattress manufacturers, « . . If Australia is held and ships can get through to this country, the wool situation will be much improved. . . . Boats coming in from England are carrying more chalk and less Scotch whisky. . . . Banks soon may be able to lend a company money, but nothing but the contract as collateral. Army and navy will guarantee the loan—if the plans are o. k.'d. . . . Sugar rationing may increase sales of bread and cereals, if we follow the BritishCanadian pattern.
