In quiet country churches, in tall cathedrals with stained glass windows, the people kneel to pray. It might be any other Easter in America . . . Easter lilies in the windows . . taking place as usual on Main Street, U. S. A... . even the children hunting for Easter eggs on the lawn. .. But this is Easter, 1942. And to Americans, seventeen weeks at war, the day has new meaning. Today they pray for Victory, for

EASTER DAY is coming again. It is coming in spite of war. It is coming in spite of world cataclysm. It is coming in spite of greed and hatred and lust. It is coming in spite of blasted hopes and the collapse of men’s dreams.
Never before in history has humanity faced such an hour, when the stark brutality of armed might left no smallest section of life unthreatened. The sinister implications of that brutality already have found their way into our homes and into the lives of our friends and loved ones. It is already a “different’ world that we live in—and it will be still more different as the days pass. Make no mistake about that.
BUT EASTER IS COMING AGAIN. A memorial of how, after days of suffering, climaxed by physical death, the world’s best friend brought a new and revolutionary hope to mankind.
How fitting and how welcome that now, in the uncertainty and desperation of this hour, we recall the fact of Easter! SPIRITUAL REALITY TRIUMPHANT OVER MALEVOLENCE AND BRUTE FORCE—GENTLENESS AND LONGSUFFERING RISING VICTORIOUS ABOVE BITTERNESS AND LOSS.
The “priceless ingredient” of our lives now is faith, faith in the supremacy and survival-value of spiritual reality. May Easter bring us to our knees in repentance for our weakness and sin; may humility of spirit lead us into the presence of One who is able to work miracles of courage and strength even in the darkness and despair of a shattered world.
For Easter is real. Beyond all the cold facts of bombs and bayonets it sets a great light. The hope of the world is in it. The future of mankind is bound up with it. No militaristic force, however ruthless, can destroy it. Let us follow that light now and in all of the days to come, that ours may be a SAVING FAITH, and that the triumph of Easter may be a sure and personal possession.
SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 1042
the triumph of Goodness over the forces of Evil and Oppression. And their prayers will be answered. Make no mistake about that. For that is the promise of Easter, just as it was 1909 years ago... There will be other Sundays when the world is free, when kindness and love prevail even in the lands that today have forgotten Easter. That is the kind of dawn we may expect . . . the kind of Easter we can hope for in America.
