Unity Urged For Anthem

Make It More Singable, wal Office Asks. |

MILWAUKEE. Wis. April 2 (U. P) ~The U. S. war department has| suggested that the national drive | for high morale and unity would be} served by a semblance of unity in| the singing of “The Star-Spangled! Banner.” | The recommendation was made at} the music education's national conference before a clinic of top-flight musical leaders considering ways to make the national anthem more “singable.” Objecting to the present national “differences” concerning “The StarSpangled Banner” which prompt the army, navy and marines each to use a separate version, Maj. Howard Bronson, war department music officer, asked that the clinic devise a version acceptable to all.

Stanzas Change Tune

Peter W. Dykema, emeritus pro- | fessor of music education at Columbia University Teachers college, who | overhauled the anthem to make it more singable, explained that some of the confusion resulted because bands fail to allow for certain differences in fittting music to the words of the various stanzas C. V. Buttelman, Chicago, executive secretary of the conference, told ti that improvements in | phrasing and note value would make the anthem easier for the voices of untrained singers and detract nothing from its instrumentation

Can Public Opinion Polls Tell Producers Anything?

THE HOLLYWOOD PRODUCERS’

All information would be available to the whole industry. It pre-

How is it possible to tell a Hollywood producer anything about his business? The onlookers want to know,

ster” after the story from which it was taken. Studio brass hats began to worry about such an obvious historical title. They wanted to change it to “All That Money Can Buy.” But before making the switch, they took a poll. The survey showed that 364 to one were in favor of the title, “The Devil and Daniel Webster.” So the studio went ahead and released the picture as “All That Money Can Buy.” It was a fine film, but it did bum business. 2 o 2 INDIANA HAS 530 theaters with a total seat capacity of

ONE OF THE MOST lavish productions in years, reminiscent of the follies series of five years back, is a forthcoming Warner Bros. production, “Sweethearts of 1042." . . . Actor Lyle Talbot and actress Veda Borg suffered burned uniforms while making a scene for “She's in the Army” when a magnesium bomb exploded. . . . Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse team up in Walt Disney's “Symphony Hour.” Seems that Donald was left out of “Fantasia” and squawked about it. . . . Tim Holt leads the trail of westerns. He's just made his tenth series of action melos. , . . Harry Langdon is back in films again, in “House of Errors.”
