HTS AT COST OF ERSATZ RUBBER
0’Mahoney Says Standarg Of Indiana Was Denied Sample Butyl.
By THOMAS L. STOKES Times Special Writer
WASHINGTON, April 2.—Batter= ing away at Standard Oil of New Jersey's defense of its synthetic rubber tie-up with German I. G. Farbenindustrie and its patent cone trol, senate defense committee ine vestigators are directing their efe forts to prove that Standard sought to control the new war-time synthetic industry in this country and was planning a price structures to vield a profit far above that justie fied by its own cost figures. The groundwork was laid by Sene ator O'Mahoney (D. Wyo.) who singled out the testimony by William S. Farish, president, Standard of New Jersey, that the head of I. G. Farbenindustrie’s synthetic rubber production had come to the United States, at Standard’s own insistence, in December, 1938, to arrange with five leading rubber companies for experimentation in tire production. This, the Wyoming senator said, indicated Standard’s purpose to cone trol the new industry, in the light of its control of patents and the terms exacted for their use.
Refused Humble License He then went on to show, from letters and memoranda from the company’s files, that Standard in November, 1940, had refused to lie cense Humble Oil Co. of Texas, an affiliate, for synthetic rubber proe duction except on a “co-ordinated” basis with other licensees and not on a competitive basis, and, on Jan, 13, this year, had even refused samples of its butyl rubber to Standard of Indiana.
