PAGE 7 STATE FARMER DIE IN TEAW'S RUNAWAY

KOKOMO, Ind. March 31 (U. P)). —Charles Talbert, 74-year-old farmer of Russiaville, died yesterday in the crash of his wagon against a tree when he lost control of his team. Coroner E. H. Showalter said, however, that Mr. Talbert probably died of a heart attack induced by the runaway rather than in the crash, according to 2 preliminary investigation.

“Hell,” laughed Mr. McMahon, the army teaches you to fight and then when you do a little they make you tote cots. But I havent got any complaint, Everything is fine and there’s plenty of mutton.” The resemblance of pound notes to dollar bills was the chief coms plaint of Pvt. Jim Buckley of Johnstown, Pa. “Doggone if some of the boys didn’t start shooting craps with those pound and half pound notes,” he said. “And then they wondered

aroo in Australia, Ya

how they got cleaned out so quickly. It doesn’t take long to lose your pants when you are shooting like that.” (A pound sterling is worth almost $5). A little more ice on the beer coils will end another and almost universal complaint, for as Pvt. Ferdinand. Adameik of Saint Claire, Pa, pointed out, no American likes warm beer, Incidentally, there is very little hard liquor drinking among the troops and few cases of intoxication. Some of the older

soldiers, though, have a taste for a locally-produced contoction called potato whisky which iz a good deal like rye. The Yankees are discovering that they aren’t the first Americans who came to Australia in force, for there still are traces here of the days when California gold miners arrived in 50s. One of the landmarks that has held over from that day is “American Joe's bar” where the popular drink still is the “southerly buster.” The old American custom of sign-

ing the guest register also is in vogue and at the local museums Pvts, James Eshelman of Lancaster, Pa.; Charles Weber of Chicago, Dominic Cicero of Pine Bluff, Ark, and many others have listed their names.

Mr. Eshelman was a radio announcer at station WGAL, Lancaster. He hopes to broadcast from here to the folks back home soon. A couple of other Pennsylvanians I met were Corps. Curtis Shomo of Robinson, and Richard Hoffman of Pittsburgh.
