LONDON, March 27 (U. P).— Russia. using a new type submarine, was reported today to have sunk 10 German transports in northern waters during the last few days. One of the most important battles of the war for Russia's northern port of Nurmansk appeared to be developing. Well informed London quarters said German air attacks on Murmansk probably were the start of a land, sea and air drive against it. Lend-Lease Alarms Nazis The Russians shot down 13 of 68 German planes which attacked Murmansk Wednesday. and informants here said the city had been bombed on three successive days. with minor damage but compaiatively heavy casualties. Police said Kempter was the weak link of the ring. By keeping him under surveillance several months, they were led straight to the spies’ headquarters in Sao Paulo.

Kept in Touch With Berlin

They charged that the organization here was the clearing house for reports from both North and | South America, and the transmit- , ters of 1000 watts power each, were lin constant communication with Berlin, Kempter, police said, was charged with observing ships’ movements in Brazilian ports, and was assisted by Hans Muth, superintendent of the German-controlled Radic Telefunken in Rio De Janeiro. The agents will be held on Isla Da Flores in Guanabara bay. Meanwhile, investigators were en route to Santo Antonio to hear the

marines and warships to break the Barents sea “life line” from England: and America, was believed to have inspired the German air attacks on Murmansk. In recent weeks, deliveries of American lend-lease supplies to Murmansk, Archangel and other far northern ports have increased to such an extent that the Germans were believed to be highly alarmed.

Pushing Into Stalino

Radio Moscow reported that, after two days of heavy fighting, the Russians had advanced eight miles along the Leningrad front and thrown the Germans out of four more populated places. Around Staraya Russa, the Russians were reported annihilating what was left of the encircled German 16th army with big guns and bombing planes. Marshal Semyon Timoshenko’s forces were said to be pushing the Germans through the suburbs of Stalino into the heart of the city.

RUMANIA DEMANDS SLICE OF BULGARIA

By PAUL GHALI

t. 1942. by The Indianapolis The Chicago Daily News, I

BERN, March 27.—Well-founded, exclusive information today puts new light on the basis of the tangled relations between Rumania and its neighbors. A catalog of claims on Bulgaria, I learn, was handed by the Rumanian minister in Rome to Italian Foreign Minister Count Galeazzo Ciano barely a fortnight ago.| This document recalled the services| in axis behalf by Marshal Ton An-| tonescu’s government. It stated | that the Rumanian coastline, now only on the Black sea must be complemented by an outlet to the Aegean through Bulgarian territory. Rumania’s claims, which Italy was asked to support, included: 1. A corridor from Rumania to one Aegean port, through Bulgaria. 2. A free zone for Rumania in Salonika, with transportation facilities. 3. Common occupation, with Bulgaria, of the former Greek Pindus region, where a Rumanian minority is said to live.
