New Sinks Ready For Military Needs
New styles of enameled cast iron flat-rim sinks have been designed by plumbing manufacturers to fit today’s low cost market of military, naval and defense housing. These new sinks fange in length from 24 to 60 inches and all are 21 inches wide so they can be built into metal or wood cabinets. Their length is determined by the stvle. The 60-inch model has two basins and two drainboards. The basins of all these new sinks are eight inches deep and are fitted with combination stoppers and strainers. 0
INSULATE AND SAVE HEAT, FHA REQUESTS
Because fuel is of vital importance to the war production, owners of homes and other structures which “leak heat” can contribute much to the war effort if they insulate these buildings and thus save fuel, the FHA said today. Already the threat of a fuel shortage is casting a shadow over the eastern seaboard, officials said. Insulation helps to conserve fuel and at the same time involves the use of little or no material needed otherwise for the war effort, The FHA pointed out that it is unusual to call the attention of the home owner to insulation especially when spring is here, but the home owner can get the material today, they said, as it is not on the list of critical materials.

a panic-stricken NYA, seeking to save itself in wartime, is providing a reservoir of semi-trained cheap labor in a non-union shop was told in the Senate Education and Labor committee hearings on the McKel-

Clifton Brannon, counsel and personnel man for the company, came here to testify about the fine NYA setup which provides 30-cent-an-hour labor for its operation in Toccoa, “the city beautiful.” But under cross-examination by Senator Kenneth D. McKellar (D. Tenn.), author of the bill to abelish the two agencies, Mr. Brannon acknowledge that similar youngsters doing the same work in the company’s shops at Peoria, Ill, begin at a 40-cent wage scale. That shop is organized by the A. F. of L., he said. McKellar Insistent
Mr. Brannon preferred to talk about that “sincere Christian gentleman, Mr, Tourneau” (his employer) rather than ihe 10-cent wage differential. But Senator MecKellar insisted on bringing up the distasteful subject. “Our Georgia boys are shopbroken and easy to train when they come from NYA,” Mr. Brannon insisted. “They are patriotic and love to work for us on the $20,000,000 or more of war contracts which the company has obtained. The finest sort of spirit prevails among our Toccoa personnel.” | “But how about the difference | you are paying for the same work

In addition to their wage scale, starting at 50 cents an hour, the company pays a “premium” for faster production, he said. ‘This Senator McKellar persisted in calling a “bonus” for the “speed-up,” and Senator Taft (R. 0. questioned Mr. Pease about the union organization in his shop. “We have an independent union,” he renlied. “Did it have anything to do with setting the premium scale?” Senator Taft asked. “No, it did not,” Mr. Pease said.
